The long-awaited reboots of The X-Files are finally happening, and the man in charge, Ryan Coogler, is giving us new information on what viewers can expect. Seven years since the two-season revival ended on Fox, The X-Files is being reimagined by Coogler, who has worked on Black Panther, Creed, and Sinners.
Appearing on Last Podcast on the Left, Coogler affirmed that his next film is, in fact, The X-Files. This is the return of one of TV's favorite science fiction shows, which was originally produced by Chris Carter. The show premiered in 1993 and continued for nine seasons until it ended in 2002, later picking up two revival seasons and a series of films.
Coogler revealed that he is aiming to create a version of the show that speaks to both longtime fans and a new audience. He said,
"I’m working on X-Files, bro. That’s what’s immediately next. I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it."
With Chris Carter’s public blessing and early talks with former cast members, the reboot is beginning to take shape.
Ryan Coogler confirms his creative path for The X-Files Reboot

Coogler is dedicated to bringing something new while maintaining the legacy of the original show. He stated during his appearance on his podcast,
"Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f***ing scary"
Chris Carter, the original creator of the show, has shared his thoughts on Coogler’s take on the reboot. According to Last Podcast on the Left, Carter said,
“I’m honored that they came to me and asked me, not for my permission, but my blessing.”
Coogler aims to give the reboot a distinct tone, with a clear focus on retaining the suspenseful, investigative nature that defined the original.
“We’re gonna try to make something really great, bro, and really be something for the real X-Files fans, and maybe find some new ones,” Coogler added.
Carter also stated previously that Coogler's take would have a "diverse cast," although casting announcements have yet to be issued. Coogler has not discussed the plot, but the intention to use a combination of new and old is evident.
Gillian Anderson might return as Dana Scully
One of the most significant questions surrounding the reboot has been whether any original cast members will be involved. Coogler has now confirmed that he's talked to Gillian Anderson about the possibility. Anderson was FBI Special Agent Dana Scully throughout the original 11 seasons and is a fan favorite.

Coogler stated,
"I’ve spoken to the great Gillian Anderson. She’s amazing. She’s incredible. You know, fingers crossed there"
In 2023, Anderson herself commented favorably on the prospect of returning. As per Last Podcast on the Left, she said,
"There’s a chance it will happen, whether I am involved is a whole other thing, but in his (Coogler's) hands, I am not saying no, because I think he’s really cool."
Anderson also added,
“I think if he did it, it would probably be done incredibly well, and maybe I’ll pop in for a little somethin’ somethin’.”
While nothing is confirmed yet, Anderson’s openness and Coogler’s outreach suggest that a return could happen in some form. David Duchovny, who played Fox Mulder, has not yet commented publicly on The X-Files reboot.
Ryan Coogler has officially announced that The X-Files reboot is his next big project. He made these revelations while on a Last Podcast on the Left interview, stating that he intends to do something new but still pay homage to the first series.
Coogler also announced that he has been in communication with Gillian Anderson regarding bringing her back to reprise her character as Dana Scully. As of yet, no casting has been announced, but both Coogler and Anderson have expressed interest in doing so.
Development is now underway and Coogler is at the reins, with more information likely to be coming soon. The X-Files reboot is officially in motion.
