While Chelsea and Rick’s deaths have left the fans of White Lotus devastated, to say that those were completely out of the blue would be a lie. A lot of fans had predicted that Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood) would perhaps die by The White Lotus Season 3 finale, and Rick’s chaotic energy also set him up as a potential dead character by the time the credits rolled.

Moreover, Aimee Lou Wood’s co-star Charlotte Le Bon, who played the role of Chloe, mentioned in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that

“people are going to hate Mike White”

after Season 3 ends. With a fan favorite like Chelsea dying, her words certainly rang true.

However, keeping the interviews aside, one of the strongest hints of Chelsea’s death was planted in her dialogues. Let us now explore in detail how Chelsea’s words in The White Lotus Season 3 had been foreshadowing her death all along.

Chelsea’s dialogues planted the seeds of her death in The White Lotus Season 3

If one observes the kind of things Chelsea kept saying throughout The White Lotus Season 3, it will not be hard to understand how creator Mike White had been signaling her death right from the beginning.

For instance, in Episode 1 itself, Chelsea makes a reference to death as she tells Rick,

“If you kill me I’ll follow you into the next life and the next.”

She also says,

“I’m going to help you get your joy back…even if it kills me.”

This is quite a clear hint about her fate, and coupled with her dynamic with the chaotic Rick, her words sound rather ominous, indicating something terrible is going to happen. Moreover, Chelsea also suffered two life-threatening events as she was kept at gunpoint during a robbery and was bitten by a poisonous snake that was let free by Rick.

Now, Chelsea herself believed that bad luck “comes in threes” and unfortunately for her, that is exactly what happened. She died the third time she faced a life-threatening incident, which was also unsurprisingly orchestrated by Rick. Moreover, Chelsea had also been telling Rick that she was feeling that

“something bad is going to happen”

and when it does happen it claims both their lives. Talking about how their fates were intertwined, Walton Goggins’ posted on Instagram, saying,

“To me, ours was a love story. It was only ever a love story, hindered by unresolved, childhood trauma.”

Since Rick’s actions directly resulted in Chelsea’s death, his words make absolute sense. Moreover, given how Chelsea had already told Rick that he was unfortunately a victim of the decisions he himself took, their tragedy hits harder, even though it was foreshadowed right from the beginning.

The White Lotus can be streamed on Max.
