In The Wheel of Time, Aes Sedai are divided into seven Ajahs, each distinguished by a different color and representing distinct qualities. Their Ajah is reflected in the color of their clothing. While they all belong to one organization—the White Tower—they are fundamentally unique in nature. In Season 1, Moiraine, who belongs to the Blue Ajah, briefly explains the concept and how these factions function.
Aes Sedai consist of women trained for their specific purposes in the White Tower. These women choose their Ajah based on their strengths, weaknesses, ideologies, and goals. However, Aes Sedai are neither entirely good nor evil in the show, as they are bound by certain rules. This means they can sometimes act as allies or appear villainous.
Here is what each color of Aes Sedai represents in The Wheel of Time
Blue Ajah represents justice, and Aes Sedai in this faction champion righteousness. They are known for their vast network of spies and involvement in global affairs. It is the most well-known Ajah in the White Tower, and Moiraine belongs to it. Moiraine has taken on the responsibility of finding the Dragon Reborn and defeating the Dark One.
Red Ajah's consists of women known for "gentling" men who can channel. They are known to dislike men, viewing them as a threat to humanity because, years ago, a man's actions led to the Breaking of the World. As a result, they also fear the Dragon Reborn and often appear as antagonists in the White Tower.
Green Ajah is made up of warriors who fight on the frontlines during wars. Their primary goal is to participate in the Last Battle against the Dark One. This Ajah often bonds with members of other Ajahs for strategic purposes. Alanna belongs to this faction of Aes Sedai.
Yellow Ajah refers to the power of healing. They can heal severe injuries, wounds, and sickness using the One Power. They pose a challenge to the Blue Ajah and were the ones burned to death by the Children of the Light in previous episodes of The Wheel of Time.
Brown Ajah focuses on knowledge and scholarship. They dedicate their lives to studying and preserving history, often becoming so immersed in research that they lose awareness of the world around them. They are the ones who usually discover various aspects of the One Power that aid the White Tower.
White Ajah consists of sisters who are philosophers and logicians, prioritizing reason and detached contemplation over emotions. They are less interested in the outside world and, in this regard, are similar to the Brown Ajah. White and Red Ajahs have been at opposite ends in The Wheel of Time.
Gray Ajah is known for their diplomatic skills. Members act as mediators and negotiators in political matters.
Other than these seven Ajahs, there is also the Black Ajah, a secretive faction that serves the Dark One instead of the White Tower. The Black Ajah operates in secrecy, as all Aes Sedai swear an oath never to follow the Shadow. However, members of this Ajah have broken their oaths and work in direct opposition to the White Tower’s mission.
