Smallville co-creator Alfred Gough recently shared a disappointing update about the animated sequel series based on the 2001 show.

The 2001 series, created by Gough and Miles Miller, introduced Tom Welling's Superman and ran for ten seasons. Michael Rosenbaum played Lex Luthor.

Welling and Rosenbaum expressed interest in reviving the show in animated form and bringing back as many original characters as possible. While talks of a potential sequel series were circulating, James Gunn and DC had not green-lighted the show yet.

Recently, Gough appeared on Welling and Rosenbuam's podcast, revealing the reason for this delay—DC's upcoming Superman movie starring David Corenswet.

More on the Smallville sequel in our story.

While fans were eagerly waiting for updates on the Smallville sequel, there has been hardly any news on the progress. This is probably because Gunn and the DCU are focusing on projects linked directly with the franchise's timeline.

In an interview with Comic Book Resources, Welling discussed how Smallville's original creators, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, are on board to write for the new animated project but have not received the green light yet:

"But we just can't do anything without DC saying we can do it. They just haven't given us a green light."

While this update was disappointing, fans expected things to move forward for the sequel. But Gough's latest comments on the Welling and Rosenbaum's Talk Ville Podcast hint that the sequel is probably off the table for now because DC and Gunn are channeling all their focus on Corenswet's Superman reboot. He said:

"I think the problem with most projects in development in any studio and/or any network is regime change. Warners has obviously gone through a lot, and I think the fact that they are in the process of rebooting Superman again, kind of unfortunately, I think, keeps our thing off the table for a bit."

While Gough's comments clearly state the reason for the delay, it also makes sense because DC ended Superman & Lois with Season 4 earlier so the show would not interfere with the Superman movie reboot. And now Welling's new sequel series has likely suffered the same fate.

While Gough's comments hint that fans should not wait with bated breath for the sequel series, as it might take a while, it still holds a chance.

Corenswet's Superman will hit the theaters on July 11, 2025, which is not too far now. After Gunn and DC are done with the Superman movie, Smallville will probably get the green light. During the podcast, Gough also added:

"Everything comes around in one form or another, I just read the other day that they are rebooting Buffy, for Hulu."

While it looks like Gunn is focused on charting out DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, and Superman is the first movie for that, the sequel series could still come on board.

Since the 2001 show was a massive hit and a fan favorite, a revival could actually benefit the network. Secondly, an animated series requires much less funding than a live-action series, which might favor the show.

But Gough's latest comments confirm that the sequel series is not happening at the moment, and Corenswet's Superman reboot is the next big project to wait for from DC.
