The Rookie Season 7 Episode 9 recap: Nolan is caught between a rock and a hard place

The Rookie Season 7 Episode 9 recently aired on Hulu. The latest Episode of The Rookie Season 7 was titled The Kiss and consisted of several interlinked storylines, the most important among them being the fallout from the previous drive-by shootout that afflicted James and Kylie. The initial suspicion then falls on James's wife, Nyla Harper, who is suspected of having arranged a hit on her cheating husband.

On the other hand, the latest episode of The Rookie season 7 also saw Nolan stuck between a rock and a hard place since he caught James and Kylie kissing each other moments before the shootout. Nolan was subsequently faced with the difficult choice of either breaking this secret to Nyla or letting it slide and watching her crumble under suspicion of murdering her husband.

The Rookie season 7 episode 9: Nolan strives to clear Nyla's name

The previous episode of The Rookie Season 7, titled Wildfire, featured a high-octane crescendo when a drive-by shootout gravely injured James Murray and Kylie Thomas. As they fight for their lives in the hospital, the initial suspicion for the shootout falls on Nyla Harper, the officer who was formerly responsible for training Nolan. The shooter is subsequently identified to be Connor, as per the investigation carried out by Detective Angela Lopez.

After Nolan revealed that he had spotted James kissing Kylie moments before the shootout, Nyla is thought to be responsible for the shooting since she had the motive to exact revenge from her cheating husband. Things are further complicated when the others learn that it was indeed Nyla who had arrested Connor eighteen months ago.

Nolan, true to his manner, works hard to clear Nyla's name from the sphere of suspicion. This is eventually achieved as the entire force chips in to contribute. Apart from this, the episode presented several other smaller cases, including that of the maid who was arrested on charges of trying to rob an old lady and the meth lab thieves.

Nathan Fillion speaks about an intense moment

Nathan Fillion, who plays the character of The Rookie John Nolan, recently expressed the intensity of the moment when his character must divulge the secret of the kiss between James and Kylie to Nyla. Fillion said to Booked: The Rookie Aftershow:

"It really was breaking Nolan’s heart to have to be the one just to hurt Nyla in any way, shape or form, and yet he’s honor-bound. He has to say something in that situation.”

Speaking about the scene where Nolan reveals the truth to Nyla, Fillion commented:

"I think I added a bit or two to that (scene) just to make sure we are covering all the bases of how important she has become to him. I mean, let’s not forget, first of all, Mekia Cox…what an incredibly talented young woman playing that part of Nyla Harper. Let’s not forget how terribly antagonistic that relationship was when she first arrived on our show. How angry and cut off she was, how guarded she was and, over time, what a journey she has made, what an arc she has created.”
