The Rookie Season 7 Episode 16 preview: A familiar face returns to the squad

The Rookie Season 7 Episode 16 will see a familiar face return to the squad, and he is none other than Seth Ridley (Patrick Keleher), Lucy's newest rookie, who was introduced in the Season 7 premiere.

The synopsis of the upcoming episode, titled The Return, is as follows:

"The team has mixed feelings when a familiar face returns hoping to prove himself. Meanwhile, an influencer gets his fans to come after Wesley and Tim supports Lucy as she prepares for the sergeant’s exam."

The sneak peek into The Rookie's latest episode teases Seth's grand return as he announces that he has rejoined the FTO program. We have already seen him lying, manipulating situations, and denying responsibility for all his mistakes back when he was assigned cases with Lucy; his return will surely add another layer to the story.

The episode will air on ABC on April 29, 2025, at 9 pm ET.

Sergeant Grey earlier fired Seth Ridley in The Rookie Episode 10

Seth was introduced in the Season 7 premiere, but his suspicious behavior and pathological lying did not sit right with his mentor, Lucy. While she gave him many benefits of the doubt, his mistakes were getting out of hand.

In addition, he also revealed that his cancer has come back, which Lucy felt was another lie to gain sympathy for his incompetence. In The Rookie Episode 10, Lucy finally asks him to take a blood test, which will prove that he actually has cancer.

But when he refuses to take the test, Sergeant Grey fires him. However, that was certainly not the last we saw of him, as he is back and is now assigned to Nolan. The upcoming episode will see Seth shadow Nolan on a case, which will likely bring problems for the squad. In the trailer, Nolan says to Seth:

"Your previous errors have been documented. I won't believe anything you say. I am your nightmare TO.''

Lucy will prepare for the sergeant exam in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 16

In addition to Seth's exciting return, Lucy will prepare for her sergeant exam in The Rookie Season 7's upcoming episode.

This exam is not only a move ahead in her career, but it can also prove to be a stepping stone in her relationship with Tim. If she passes the exam, she will finally be on the same level as her ex-boyfriend Tim, and maybe then, the couple can overcome their power dynamics problem.

Since Season 7 has been building upon the 'Chenford' romance, Lucy's sergeant exam might seal the deal on the couple's future, as showrunner Alexi Hawley discussed with TV Line:

"It’s very necessary for Lucy to pass that [exam] for them to get on equal footing, if they were to be together. But I do think that her finally realizing that she has forgiven him — and him having done the emotional work on himself he needed to — is a good sign.''
