Fans of The Rookie are in for a little disappointment as this week’s episode will take longer than expected to return on screen. As confirmed by ABC, The Rookie Season 7 Episode 9 will not be airing on March 4, 2025, and instead will be back on March 11, 2025.
Given the kind of cliffhanger that The Rookie Season 7 Episode 8 ended with, fans’ anticipation for the next episode is understandable. Episode 8 showed Glasser being finally arrested and also Tim confessing his lingering feelings for Lucy as the two almost died in a fire.
While episode 9 will very likely be picking up from these plot points, the extra wait of a whole week only heightens the excitement of the viewers. Let us now explore the reason that The Rookie Season 7 Episode 9 is delayed.
The Rookie Season 7 Episode 9 will release next week
As mentioned previously, the new episode of The Rookie Season 7 will be airing on March 11, 2025. While it’s not unlikely for shows to go on a mid-season break, the delay in airing The Rookie Season 7 Episode 9 is not because of production reasons.
A very real-world event has caused this delay and it is American President Donald Trump’s Congress address. As Trump addressed the nation along with Congress’ joint session, ABC telecast the event like all other major media outlets, including Fox, NBC, CBS, The CW, etc.
The time slot was the one where The Rookie is aired, from 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm ET; therefore, the episode's postponement was inevitable.

After Kylie and James got shot after a car drove right into the community center toward the end of The Rookie Season 7 Episode 8, the next episode will pick up right from there. Those two characters’ fates were not clarified in the last episode, so fans eagerly wait to know what happened to them.
The official synopsis of episode 9 reads,
“The team mobilizes to locate a suspect after a deadly series of events affects one of their own. Meanwhile, Celina takes on her first case with Bailey’s help.”
Since episode 9 is titled "The Kiss," the episode might very well be dealing with the aftermath of Kylie and James’ kiss, which Nyla might find out at a very bad time since Kylie is shown to be shot at the end of episode 8 and might lose her life.
Previously, at the Booked: The Rookie Aftershow, Mekia Cox had spoken about Nyla, saying,
“I think Nyla reacts. She reacts and she reacts harshly sometimes, but it is definitely a reaction to the conflict and it’s her fault. She’s the one who said, let’s get married.”
She also added,
“But I think she’s questioning everything in that moment and she’s frustrated and she knows that he’s frustrated as well. And there’s been a lot of that I think recently for them and she doesn’t know what to do about it. So she’s grasping for straws. She’s trying to figure out what the best thing is to do.”
With the story turning more and more intense with each passing episode, it now remains to be seen what new information episode 9 brings and how it affects the character dynamics.
