Here's everything that we know about the recent episode.

What happened on The Righteous Gemstones season 5 episode 4?

The latest episode of The Righteous Gemstones began with the aftermath of Jesse and his henchmen vandalizing Vance Simkins' church. Vance then lashes out at his brother Craig, who reprimands him for spending more than they can afford in a bid to outsmart the Gemstones. Vance is strangely obsessed with winning Top Christ Following Man and, in this direction, has to contend with Kelvin, who has his sights set on the same reward.

Things came to a head during the panel discussion among the competitors on television. Vance tried his best to thwart Kelvin's chances when he remarked that the Evangelical Christian community is still replete with homophobic and intolerant elements, whom he referred to as "traditional." Moving on, Kelvin and his siblings are preoccupied with neutralizing Lori. They try to make a breakthrough after Jesse discovered that Lori's husband, who is known as Big Dick Mitch, is missing, along with several other men tagged on Lori's social media posts who are similarly either missing or dead.

This leads the siblings to approach their uncle for further information, in exchange for which he puts forth his television show "Teenjus," which was initially referred to as Teen Jesus, focusing on the life of Jesus when he was a teenager in Nazareth. The episode finally concludes with Eli and Lori having a moment together before they are rudely interrupted as someone torches Eli's car.

Danny McBride speaks about The Righteous Gemstones season 4

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter following the premiere of the fourth and final season, Danny McBride opened up about the genesis and development of the HBO show. When asked about the origin of the story, McBride remarked:

"I grew up in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. There was a lot of Civil War action there, and I’d find old bullets and things like that in my backyard when I was a kid. So, I’ve always been fascinated with history, just because I had context for it. When it came time to kick off this final season, I thought it would fitting to tell a story about where the Gemstones came from. No one said no, so we just kept pushing forward."

When asked about the idea of casting Bradley Cooper, McBride answered:

"I threw it off the cuff to my producing partners … “It needs to be somebody really good, somebody with charisma who everybody likes — someone like Bradley Cooper.” One of the producers was like, “Why don’t we just ask him?” I assumed that Bradley Cooper’s not going to want to come down to Charleston for no money and be in a Civil War period piece, but I was wrong. We sent him the script and he instantly got back to me. He dug the material and was flattered we asked. I never thought we’d get a guy of his stature to wear a period piece wool costume in 90 degree weather for 10 days straight. And for no money. It takes a very dedicated person to commit to that."

The Righteous Gemstones is exclusively available on HBO.
