A family vacation to Galilee Gulch should ideally be an opening for some leisurely time, but in a true The Righteous Gemstones way, madness is but obviously following them.
Season 4, Episode 4, titled “He Goeth Before You into Galilee,” takes the Gemstone family out of their typical megachurch into their over-the-top lake house, where long-standing stresses rise to the surface. Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin see the vacation as the picture-perfect opportunity to wreck their father Eli’s romance blooming with Lori.
Nevertheless, their complex schemes don’t go as planned, with The Righteous Gemstones Season 4, the fourth episode, just illuminating more about their own deep-rooted diffidence rather than about the choices made by their father, Eli.
A Vacation with Ulterior Motives for The Righteous Gemstones Season 4
As the Gemstones reach the lake house, Baby Billy starts the episode right off in the silliest way possible—waterskiing entirely stark-naked, much to Aunt Tiffany’s enjoyment.
However, the actual focus of The Righteous Gemstones Season 4, episode 4 is on Eli and Lori’s up-and-coming relationship, which has turned out to be a stern point of disagreement for his kids.
Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin believe that going back to the lake house for the first time since Aimee-Leigh’s death will inflame old memories and make Eli re-evaluate the time he spends with Lori. Their efforts to cause interference in their dad’s romance are as trivial as they are equally complex.
Their first scheme? An astonishing musical performance. Hoping to incite a feeling of deep regret and guilt-trip their dad, the siblings perform an original song, “Mama’s Here,” a deranged and snide tribute to their late mother.
While they assume that their father would cave in to pieces under the emotional heaviness of their performance, Lori smoothly sweeps their hard work under the rug, flicking them off mid-performance.
Judy, denying the feeling of defeat, intensifies her plan. First, she seduces Lori, then attempts to purchase her with a blank check for $500,000. When these plans fail too, she reroutes her plant to a downright setup, making an effort to manipulate Lori into an improper situation.
Nevertheless, Lori sees just right through Judy, aiming fingers at the fact that Judy’s fickle behavior reflects exactly how she behaved when Aimee-Leigh was sick. The entire scene is a vicious and deeply gloomy moment yet an equally comedic scene that highlights Edi Patterson’s (Judy) comedic and intense acting range in one equal measure.
BJ’s Breaking Point and Keefe’s Ghostly Gambit
While the Gemstone siblings put all of their attention on their father’s current love life, BJ tussles with an all-new challenge—finding the way around the lake house in a wheelchair after the accident that took place after some pole-dancing.
Bothered by the lack of convenience and his family’s trivializing attitude, he reaches a breaking point, rebuking in a way that the fans of the show have never seen before.
His character change from being the silent and compassionate partner into a person who now bluntly vents out his anger is also one of the most powerful moments in The Righteous Gemstones Season 4, episode 4.
For the meantime, Kelvin’s partner, Keefe, takes an even more ludicrous tactic to disrupt Eli and Lori’s budding relationship. After seeing how much Aimee-Leigh’s memory still hangs over the family, Keefe makes a decision to dress up as a phantom of her —the outfit complete with her wearing her glasses—and creep into Eli’s bedroom.
His plan, you might ask? Bother Eli into calling it quits with Lori. Unluckily for him, the act goes utterly wrong when he’s caught in the act and ends up getting beat up by a character named Sola.
Eli’s Breaking Point and an Unforgettable Finale
With each disastrous failure to push Lori away, Eli’s tolerance wears off completely. The second he finally loses his cool is one of the most appalling scenes in the history of The Righteous Gemstones.
In an unforeseen turn of events, he cracks at Jesse’s wife, Amber, telling her to “shut the f*** up,” a line that lands with a level of power that gives the entire family some intense heebie-jeebies.
Despite everything in the entire episode, Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin finally choose to make an apology. They go towards their father’s room, anticipating an emotional resolution. But The Righteous Gemstones season 4, episode 4, takes a violently unfortunate turn.
Instead, they walk in on Eli and Lori mid-sensual actions—an image so alarming that it leaves the kids yelling in utter horror. The scene glues together the episode’s silliness, which is what pushes the boundaries of what makes The Righteous Gemstones one of the most outrageous shows on television in recent times.
Episode 4 of The Righteous Gemstones Season 4 flawlessly blends exaggerated comedy with some emotional depths, as seen in the fourth episode. The clash between Eli’s new blooming love and his children’s inability to let go of the past is what steers the episode forward.
Apart from that, Keefe’s phantom act, BJ’s unforeseen anger, and Judy’s schemes add levels of comedy, but at its heart, the episode is a testimony to how this dysfunctional family continues to act in the most amusing ways known to recent-time television.
