What happened in The Rig season 1?

In season 1, the crew of the Kinloch Bravo oil rig started facing some frightening events, which began with tremors and power failures. A thick fog then cut off their communication with the mainland. When a young crew member, Baz, survived a bad fall, he started acting strangely.

At the same time, scientist Rose discovered parasitic spores in ash samples, and crew members Leck and Alwyn died under mysterious circumstances. As Baz’s behavior became more erratic, Rose determined that the spores might be connected to mass extinctions.

The situation worsened when the oil rig’s gas flare went out. The fog began then spreading toward the shore, and a lifeboat arrived carrying Coake, a suspicious representative from the oil company. He had secret plans to take control of the oil rig and destroy the organism tied to the spores.

The crew decided to fight back, realizing the spores could trigger a massive disaster. In the end, Baz stayed behind to stop the organism while the others escaped. A giant tsunami destroyed the oil rig and headed toward the coast.
