Shondaland's mystery drama series The Residence paid an emotional tribute to the late actor Andre Braugher. Braugher was initially cast to play the White House Chief Usher A.B. Wynter for the Netflix series. Braugher was part of the pre-production process (initial table reads) of The Residence and even filmed for four episodes.

Unfortunately, the Brooklyn Nine-Nine alum passed away at the age of 61 due to lung cancer on December 11, 2023. The production was halted due to the 2023 WGA strike and resumed on January 2, 2024, after Braugher's death. After his sudden demise, the role of Chief Usher was played by the Breaking Bad alum Giancarlo Esposito.

Created by Paul William Davies, The Residence debuted on March 20, 2025, on Netflix and has a total of eight episodes. The series is based on how an eccentric detective Cordelia Cupp played by Uzo Aduba tries to solve a murder scandal set in the White House where the high profile guests and staff are all suspects.

In the eighth and final episode of The Residence, titled The Mystery of the Yellow Room, the series paid tribute to Braugher in the form of a memorial title card placed at the end of the episode. The card read,

"In memory of Andre Braugher"

Apart from that Davies also revealed to Deadline that Cordelia's important speech in the final episode about the chief usher A.B. Wynter was written by Braugher. Davies mentioned that he decided to put the title card at the end of the series instead of at the beginning for a greater impact.

Born on July 1, 1962, Andre Keith Braugher was widely known for his role as Captain Raymond Holt (Vindication!) from the NBC's police comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He also featured in several notable projects including Homicide: Life on the Street (1993-1999), Gideon's Crossing (2000-2001), Hack (2002-2004), and Men of a Certain Age (2009-2011). Braugher won several accolades including two Primetime Emmy Awards.

The cast of Netflix's mystery drama series has paid tributes to the late actor Andre Braugher by remembering his legacy. The series creator Paul William Davies said in an exclusive interview with People,

"He (Andre Braugher) lived with us throughout the entire making of this. When he was here and when he was gone, we all thought about him constantly. His kind of spirit was throughout the whole show."

In the same interview, he appreciated Giancarlo Esposito for stepping into Braugher's role after the unfortunate incident. Davies revealed Esposito's decision to join The Residence and play Braugher's role was due to his close friendship with Braugher.

Barrett Foa who plays Elliot Morgan in The Residence revealed how Braugher was a constant support and how Braugher communicated with all during the pre-production process, he told People,

"When he passed it was a scary thing of like, Is this thing going to go on? Is this whole thing canceled?"

The Residence star Susan Kelechi Watson who plays Jasmine Haney, the White House assistant usher, in an emotional interview told Deadline about how Andre Braugher's death shocked everybody. She told,

"It was a tough thing that happened to us, to the world to Andre's family. Tough is an understatement. It was such a huge moment to find out we were going to work together. I remember when I went on set for the first time, the first person I bumped into was Andre Braugher in all his magnificent stature. And what a great person he was off camera, funny, charismatic family man, so smart."
