At the end of The Recruit Season 1, fans were left with a shocking cliffhanger, Max was shot by Nichka, also known as Karolina or Marta. Meanwhile, Owen (Noah Centineo) is in serious danger.
Nichka beats him up, trying to find out who he is and why he’s there. Owen quickly tells her that he’s a CIA lawyer and warns her that she just killed a CIA asset. But Nichka doesn’t believe him. She drags him to a hole in a factory, clearly planning to kill him.
Just in time, Hannah Copeland calls Amelia, who sends a rescue team. Led by Dawn, the team arrives moments before it’s too late. However, instead of immediately saving Owen, Dawn points a gun at him, hesitating as she decides what to do next. But the big question was whether Max survived. Season 2 wastes no time in answering this: Max is dead.
What happens after Max's death
After Max's death, Nichka unexpectedly ends up working with the CIA. She starts providing them with important information in exchange for money. Her mission? To gather intel on Nan Hee, the missing wife of Jang Kyun.
Unlike Max, who had a mix of toughness and emotional depth, Nichka is much colder and more ruthless. She proves to be clever and unpredictable, keeping both the characters and the audience on edge.
With Max gone, Owen quickly moves forward. He travels to South Korea and reconnects with an old childhood friend, Yoo Jin Lee. This shift makes it clear that the show isn’t dwelling too much on Max’s memory.
Even though Max and Owen’s relationship in Season 1 wasn’t deeply romantic, she played a crucial role in the story. However, in Season 2, the impact of her death is barely felt, and the show moves on quickly.
Max was one of the most interesting and dynamic characters in The Recruit. She wasn’t just a fierce CIA asset, she was also mysterious, unpredictable, and emotionally engaging. While she was sometimes dangerous, she was also likable in her own way.
Laura Haddock’s performance made Max a standout, almost as important as Noah Centineo’s Owen. But with her gone in Season 2, there’s a noticeable gap that the show doesn’t quite manage to fill.
Max’s death is confirmed early in The Recruit Season 2, and the show quickly moves on to new plots and characters. Nichka takes on a bigger role, proving to be even more ruthless than Max.
Meanwhile, Owen shifts his focus to new challenges and relationships, leaving Max’s memory behind. However, for many fans, her absence is strongly felt, as she was one of the most intriguing characters in the series.
