The Last of Us Season 2 opened with the closing moments of the previous season, where Joel lies to Ellie. The scene then changes perspective to that of five firefly young soldiers grieving at the grave of their fallen comrades. For those who don't know, Joel massacred the fireflies at the hospital. Abby swears vengeance on Joel at the resting place of the fallen fireflies, one of them belonging to a familiar.
Following this scene, the intro to The Last of Us starts, and after that, we see the five-year time jump at Jackson. We don't see Abby or the rest of her crew after that. But they do return in the concluding moments of the episode as they make it to an area close to the town.
Thus, we can see that our main characters will be facing the triple threat of Cordyceps vines in the pipes, an invasion from the infected, and vengeful fireflies wanting payback on Joel. Abby and crew's presence seems to hint at the heartbreaking moment from The Last of Us Part II game that was released in June 2020.
"Five years later. While Joel seeks help in mending his relationship with a distant Ellie, the now 19-year-old encounters a new threat."

Who is Abby from The Last of Us?
As stated before, Future Days, the very first episode of The Last of Us Season 2, opens differently. The game opens with Joel telling Tommy the truth about what happened at the hospital. Abby is hunting for Joel for an unknown reason, and a run-in with the infected leads Abby and her crew to the man they are hunting. They hold Joel and Tommy hostage, and Abby accomplishes her revenge by killing Joel.
However, her motivations are not revealed until much later in the game. Turns out, the surgeon Joel shot while saving Ellie's life in the first game and the hospital was her father. This revelation gives this character a legitimate reason for her antagonism in The Last of Us Part II and serves as a reminder of Joel ultimately being a morally questionable man.
But one thing that fans have reacted strongly to is the early introduction to Abby and her motivations in the HBO The Last of Us Season 2.
What is HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 about?
After a brief flashback and a new scene dating back to the time from the first season. Then, this The Last of Us episode jumps five years from the ending of Season 1. Joel and Ellie are living in Jackson with Tommy, Maria, and their son, Benjamin. However, things aren't as fine as they seem on the surface, and the town and our characters are poised to face threats from more than one front.
"Five years after the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind."
New episodes of the seven-episode long The Last of Us Season 2 will be released every Sunday on HBO and Max.
