What is the Plot of The Åre Murders?

The show focuses on Hanna Ahlander, a Stockholm-based police officer. Hanna faces a double tragedy in life as she gets suspended from her job and gets dumped by her partner. Seeking a break from her troubles, she goes to stay at her sister’s home in the town of Åre, known for its ski resorts.

As the town prepares to celebrate the Lucia festival, a girl disappears. Hanna, who has not given up on her officer-self yet, starts investigating the case to get to the truth. The local police officer, Daniel Lindskog, does not want her to get involved in the case initially.

However, as the police are severely understaffed, and there is mounting pressure from the missing girl’s family, Daniel agrees to team up with Hanna, and the two endeavor to find the girl amid an excruciating winter.

The five episodes are based on Viveca Sten’s two books: Hidden in Snow (2022) and Hidden in Shadows (2023). The bestselling books have sold more than 10 million copies internationally.
