The Pitt, a popular real-time medical drama, has officially wrapped its first season, and the finale has brought one of the most shocking reveals of the year. Debuting on Max on January 16, 2025, and created by Sam Esmail, The Pitt immediately gained popularity due to its strong character work, immersive 15-hour real-time narrative structure, and high-stakes pacing. Each episode unfolds over the course of one hour in the Emergency Room in real time, creating a compelling, emotionally charged story that is unlike anything else this year on television.

During a single overnight shift, the show's main cast of trauma doctors navigates both personal and professional problems. The Pitt combines the pandemonium of emergency treatment with incredibly personal stories. It has made a name for itself as a premier character drama.

Episode 10, also the season finale, titled "9:00 P.M.," aired on April 10, 2025, bringing in one of the biggest surprises of the season. The audience, as well as the others within the show, were unaware of Shawn Hatosy's character, Dr. Jack Abbot. As per the storyline, he has been a single-leg amputee until the very end of the show.

The Pitt struck a mix between medical reality and character-driven drama. This was everything from treating drug victims to handling a mass casualty incident at a festival.

The horrific night shift that started in the pilot came to an end on Thursday, April 10, 2025. This was done with the release of the season finale, “9:00 P.M.” (Season 1, Episode 10). As additional trauma cases poured in following the major massacre at the imaginary Pitt Fest music festival, Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) reached the breaking point of his physical and mental endurance in the last hour.

This was the setting for the surprise return of Dr. Jack Abbot (Shawn Hatosy), who, despite having left the hospital previously, displayed his dedication and fortitude in his decision to join hands during the crisis. His unexpected return, accompanied by a trauma kit and a go-bag, suggested that the former combat medic needed to stay near the action even when he wasn't on duty.

Since Dr. Abbot was initially discovered standing on the hospital roof in what seemed to be a suicidal moment during the series debut, Shawn Hatosy's portrayal of the character has been cloaked in mystery.

In the final seconds of the climax, the most significant revelation regarding Abbot was made. It was discovered that Abbot is a single-leg amputee as he prepared to help with arriving trauma patients. The disclosure was all the more dramatic because up until then, the prosthetic had been concealed from both the audience and the other characters.
