The Pitt Season 1 Episode 12, titled "6 PM", takes us through yet another hour of a mass-level emergency being handled at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital ER. This episode captures the immediate aftermath of the mass shooting that had taken place in the PittFest.
The episode covers the events that took place during the 6-7 p.m. shift in which the ER would be swarmed with wounded patients arriving straight from the music festival after suffering the tragedy, as shown in the previous episode. The doctors, even the ones who were either off duty or sent off came back to help the already short-staffed department deal with the medical crisis effectively.
Episode 8 also highlights how the residents and interns stepped up to help and take responsibility during the emergency, overcoming their doubts and fears.
The shadow of the suspected mass shooter, David, would however keep haunting the episode as his mother Theresa grappled with the possibility of her son being the culprit. The episode ends with Dr. Robby struggling to keep up while waiting for the news of his son Jake who had gone to PittFest with his girlfriend.
Here is the complete recap of The Pitt Season 1 Episode 12.
The trauma team gears up for the approaching horror in The Pitt Season 1 Episode 12
The team had been debriefed and prepared for the approaching trauma cases by Dr. Robby and Dr. Abbott. They advised their juniors to reduce their reliance on modern medical instruments and technologies and trust their instincts during such instances.
The doctors and other healthcare workers got to work the moment the ambulances from the music festival started coming in. One of the first cases introduced was that of a woman named Sylvia and her son, Omar, who had been shot in the chest. This marked the onset of an entire hour of utter dread, chaos, and gore.
However, the doctors showed perseverance and tried to treat as many patients as humanly possible, sending in some for surgeries and keeping some under observation. On the other hand, they also found themselves facing an immense shortage of medical supplies and resources. However, Dr. Robby and others demonstrated quick wit and exceptional skill that made them adept at treating their trauma cases during such a critical time.
The Pitt Season 1 Episode 12 recap: Langdon returns to help in the overwhelming situation
In one of the preceding episodes of The Pitt, Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) became furious after discovering that his protege Frank Langdon (Patrick Ball) had been hoarding drugs for himself from the patients, asking him to immediately leave the hospital. However, this episode has Langdon return to help out the understaffed emergency ward.
When Dana asked Dr. Robby about Langdon being back, he told her that he would deal with it later. This made it clear that the emergency had provided Langdon with a chance to stay and possibly make himself useful. For instance, he was quick to diagnose a diabetic patient based on his instincts (and with his "healing hand").
On the other hand, Kiara Alfaro, a social worker, and the hospital’s ward clerk took it upon themselves to report to the loved ones of the survivors in the emergency ward regarding the latter's conditions while being as empathetic as possible during their interactions.
Meanwhile, several residents are also seen to do their bits by overcoming their doubts and fears. We see Javadi stand up to her mother and take control of the situation while treating her patients.
Even the other residents and interns took unusual measures to treat their patients, such as Mel donating blood (due to the shortage of blood) to Sylvia who was in a life-and-death situation. Meanwhile, her son Omar, who had been shot, survived the surgery.
The Pitt Season 1 Episode 12 recap: Is David the mass shooter?
Another important subplot in this episode is about the possibility of David, an 18-year-old who prepared a list of women who had hurt him previously, being the mass shooter.
However, just like his mother, the viewers will also have to wait for the next episode to find out if he did commit the heinous crime at all.
Meanwhile, throughout the episode, Dr. Robby would try getting in touch with his son Jake who had gone to PittFest with his girlfriend. The episode ends with the doctor struggling to keep up while texting his son, asking him if he’s okay.
As the show is known for depicting the reality of a trauma department, the new episode does not shy away from painting a realistic picture of the aftermath of the horrific event of a mass shooting.
