What happened in The Pitt premiere?
The Pitt premiere introduces us to the ER section of the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital, where Dr. Michael Robby is having a hard day as it is the fourth death anniversary of his mentor.
It is established that Robby always takes this day off to avoid the memories of his mentor's death. However, when his son ditches him for his girlfriend, he is forced to work, putting him in a tough spot.
Robby is visibly shaken, as he attempts to maintain his cool while attending to all the patients admitted to the ER and training new residents. Nurse Dana tries to comfort him but he says that he is fine.
The Pitt premiere brings diverse storylines together to create a tense situation in the ER. A mother brings her drug-addicted teen, a family bringing their Alzheimer-stricken father, and a 4-year-old with a cannabis overdose. All these stories intertwine to highlight the dynamic nature of the ER and how doctors are always trying to improve their patients' lives.
In an interview with TVLine, Noah Wyle talks about the COVID-19 trauma that has shaped Robby's life in the show:
''Well, Dr. Adamson was a mentor figure, a pseudo-father figure, a good friend… all of those things. In some ways, he serves as a metaphor for that thing that we lost that we can’t quite get back — that part of ourselves that we lost during the pandemic that has changed us in a way that we haven’t really been able to synthesize, or process, or come to any kind of understanding about yet.''
He added:
''like Robby, we’ve been continually pressed into service, to move forward and move on, and normalize more and more outrageous circumstances, as if this is a normal mode of life. It builds up in aggregate.''
