HBO’s The Penguin offers a new take on the character of Oz Cobb, showcasing his rise to power in Gotham City. The crime drama continues the story of Robert Pattinson starrer film The Batman, with Colin Farrell reprising his role as the titular crime lord.
The first season of the show features eight episodes, which have been appreciated by the audience for their pacing and depth. While series fans await the confirmation of The Penguin season 2, showrunner Lauren LeFranc has shared an update about the future of the show.
LeFranc has said that she is willing to make a second season of the show on one condition: if she can exceed the standard set by the first season. The showrunner believes Gotham City residents have the potential to make up for a season 2, but she has to find the right story.
Lauren LeFranc says The Penguin season 2 will happen only if the creative team can outdo themselves
The Penguin Season 1 met with critical acclaim for its writing, direction, and performances. LeFranc knows that the show has set the bar so high for itself that a potential season 2 will have to exceed the audience’s expectations.
Speaking about whether the viewers will get to see another installment of the show, the showrunner said in an interview with The Direct:
“I mean, we put it all out on the table. I think that in order to do a second season, we have to feel like we can top ourselves.”
LeFranc added that the creative team will have to find something to delve deeper into in season 2. Meanwhile, the interesting characters featured in the show do call for more episodes. She said:
“We have to feel like there's something more there to really dig into. I mean, I really care about all these characters, even if they're terrible people. It's been a joy to write them, even though they're twisted and complicated and weird and darkly funny.”
The showrunner also said that with Gotham City residents, the creative team has a lot to experiment with. But she does not want to continue the show just for the sake of it and will only make The Penguin season 2 if she comes across the right story. She shared:
“I think Gotham City is just such a fun sandbox to play, and I'd love to keep playing in it, but I think it just has to be the right thing. We should never do anything just to do it.”
Will Colin Farrell return in The Penguin season 2?
Colin Farrell has previously expressed his doubts about playing Oz Cobb in The Penguin season 2. The actor has to put on extensive prosthetics and makeup to look the part, which takes hours.
In an interview with Total Film, Farrell revealed he felt exhausted by the end of the first season's filming and is done with the character for now. He said:
“Don’t get me wrong – I loved it – but it got in on me a little bit. By the end of it, I was bitching and moaning to anyone who would listen to me that I f**king wanted it to be finished.”
However, the actor further stated that he will probably regain the strength to play the role again in a year.
“Lauren said, ‘Look, if I could find a way that makes sense, would you talk about it?’ And I said, ‘Absolutely.’ And maybe in a year, I would. But when I finished I was like, ‘I never want to put that f**king suit and that f**king head on again,'” Farrell shared.
Matt Reeves earlier confirmed that Farrell will return as The Penguin in The Batman Part II. For now, the actor said he wants to step away from the character for some time and relax for a while.
The Penguin season 1 is streaming on Max.
