Episode 3 of HBO Max’s The Penguin recently dropped and fans are already left gobsmacked. The new episode saw a major cliffhanger which could change the entire plot as we know it. The DCU series is the second installment of The Batman saga and is set nearly a week since The Riddler's attack on Gotham.

With Carmine Falcone deceased, his psychotic daughter Sofia Falcone taking over, and The Maroni crime family hungry for the top spot in Gotham, Oz Cobb is walking on thin ice. Cobb has been playing his cards well and perhaps already has a trump card in place.

Cobb’s endgame is to be the kingpin of Gotham’s underbelly and has maniacal competitors to get out of the way. With the way things have unraveled thus far, he’s both doing as Romans do when in Rome and playing by intuition without concern for the aftermath of his actions.

From colluding with Sofia to dealing with the Maroni family and Victor, his new aide leaving - here’s a rundown of episode 3 of The Penguin.

What happens between Sofia Falcone and Oz Cobb in episode 3 of The Penguin?

In episode 3 of The Penguin Sofia Falcone and Oz Cobb cement their business relationship by distributing a new drug: Bliss in the streets of Gotham. Colin Farell’s character is ultra-cautious with Sofia especially because of their history.

Before Cobb was in an established-ish position, he closely worked with the Falcone family and was Sofia’s chauffeur. However, after he played dirty and unmasked her as The Hangman to her late father Carmine, to everyone’s shock she was sent to where all the deranged criminals of Gotham live: Arkham Asylum.

Episode 3 sees the partners in crime have a brief exchange about Cobb’s choice and Sofia testing her business buddy. The conversation sparks with Sofia asking Cobb if he’d have ratted her identity to her dad if he was given a do-over.

Cobb nonchalantly responded with a yes! Intrigued, Sofia beckons him to elaborate, which he does ever so bluntly.

The Penguin did empathize with Falcone’s daughter’s unexpected imprisonment at the Asylum. However, he asserts not changing a thing since it propelled him to a position of power.

While Sofia was already on the fence for trusting Cobb about continuing the family business, Cobb’s remarks may have got the gears in her head turning in an unsavory direction. However, with the way things end between them at the end of episode 3, she’ll likely be out for Penguin’s hide.

Why do The Maroni's ambush Oz Cobb and Sofia Falcone in episode 3 of The Penguin?

As episode 3 approached its end Cobb and Sofia reached a compromise in business and his bombshell confession which could prove cathartic later. The duo found themselves surrounded and ambushed by The Maroni crime family led by Salvatore ‘Sal’ Maroni’s wife, Nadia.

The group busts in guns blazing all with one intention: eliminating the competition. Their rage was triggered primarily by Cobb who had offered to render his loyalty and services to the Maroni family - he did so when he visited Sal at Blackgate Prison.

Additionally, they weren’t thrilled about Falcone and Cobb’s collusion with Bliss. Especially not after he agreed to circulate Bliss for The Maronis in exchange for being pardoned for the murder of Alberto Maroni. This sparks beef between the two causing Cobb to make a choice he might later regret heavily.

Is Sofia Falcone alive at the end of episode 3 of The Penguin?

Yes, Sofia Falcone is still alive at the end of episode 3 of The Penguin. In the wake of Maroni’s ambush, Cobb and Sofia were pretty much defenseless against the rain of bullets. Just as they were almost done for, his getaway car with Victor driving swerves in the nick of time. The Penguin gets in and chooses to leave Sofia behind!

With Victor driving away, Sofia is left to fend for herself against the sinister group with bloodlust. While Sofia doesn’t make an appearance after Cobb is driven away, she is the primary antagonist of The Penguin.

Neither would it make sense for her to be killed off this early nor has she announced leaving. Presumably, she’s survived and will be out for blood when she realizes he left her to the wolves again.

Why does Victor return to Gotham in episode 3 of The Penguin?

As mentioned, Victor makes a heroic return at the end of episode 3 of The Penguin. Previously Victor was greatly conflicted by dealing with the loss of his family and working as a driver for Cobb.

He has been going back and forth with the decision to work for a budding crime boss especially because of his family’s upbringing and morals.

As the episodes unravel, he comes clean to Cobb about leaving Gotham with Garciela and never returning. Naturally, this disgruntled the kingpin who believed Victor was throwing his life away and waltzed away from him in a huff.

However, just before leaving Gotham with Garciela, he makes a split-minute decision to stick to being Cobb’s driver.

Most likely, despite him being directly in the cahoots with a villain, Victor’s passion and obligation to Cobb is what led him to return to Gotham, eventually saving his boss, and riding off into the sunset (of sorts).

The saga will continue in Episode 4 of The Penguin on October 13, 2024, on HBO Max.
