Netflix is back with a fresh season of the action thriller, The Night Agent. Created by Shawn Ryan and based on the book by Mathew Quirk, the series has already received steady reviews.

The Night Agent Season 2 aired on Netflix on January 23, 2025. However, the fate of one character is still uncertain. Showrunner Ryan seems doubtful about Rose Larkin's return.

Played by Lucianne Buchanan, Rose Larkin is seen pairing up with Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) since Season 1. Their bond has grown stronger in Season 2. However, the finale episode showed Peter breaking up with Rose for her safety. This made the viewers wonder whether the new season will feature Rose.

In an interview with Deadline, showrunner Shawn Ryan opened up about Rose's fate in the upcoming season. However, he seemed pretty doubtful as the script work was still unfinished. Ryan pointed out that they were well aware of the popularity of Peter and Rose's pairing, but they must deal with 'the reality of how different their lives are.'

"I am very well aware that one of the big strengths of Season 1- and what I think is a big strength in Season 2- is Peter and Rose together, I think the relationship is really strong."

What did Shawn Ryan say about Rose's fate in The Night Agent Season 3?

In the interview with Deadline, Ryan pointed out that the last few episodes are still not written. As per Ryan, the script will be completed before they start shooting in New York for the next season on February 3.

He also teased that Fola Evans Akingbola, who played the character of Chelsea, will be a part of the upcoming season. However, when speaking about Rose's return, he seemed doubtful:

"As for Rose, we are still figuring all of that out. What I would say is that we don't want to artificially create a situation where characters have to be a part of a specific season on a regular basis. We want to tell the story that feels true in that moment.

He also pondered over the fact that Rose and Peter's relationship is a 'beautiful one' where Peter protects her physically in the first Season, and Rose protects him emotionally in the next season. However, he also mentioned that their life paths are quite different:

"How different their lives are- him as a Night Agent who's going to be putting himself into these dangerous situations, into these worlds filled with lies and deception, her natural role in Silicon Valley, her desire for that kind of life."

Ryan's statements regarding Rose's fate in Season 3 led to speculation that she will not return for the first part of the series. With just the last couple of episodes left to be scripted, Rose's return is on thin ice. While the showrunner loved Rose's character, her fate in the series will be determined by the storyline. With Peter's focus on Jacob Monroe and his double agent duties, staying in touch with Rose would be difficult.

Even though Rose and Peter reunited in The Night Agent Season 2, there was some tension regarding the relationship, and they didn't even talk for months. While Rose suffered from the aftermath of the Camp David bombing (nightmares and PTSD), Peter was sent on a mission in Bangkok.

However, after the bioterror attack and kidnapping of Rose, Peter was sure that it was him and the nature of his duties that constantly put her in danger spots. In an emotional conversation in the hotel lobby, Peter asks Rose to promise she won't look for him again, stating it's too risky. Peter knew his enemies would target Rose, and he wanted her safe.

Rose agreed that she wouldn't communicate with Peter for every minor problem. Rose and Peter's relationship has gone through many ups and downs, finally leading to this split. However, with the love that Peter and Rose's bond received in the past seasons, the script might call for their reunion in the upcoming seasons.
