The Masked Singer's latest episode turned into a spectacle as the show celebrated DreamWorks Animation's 30th anniversary with "Shrek Night." The February 19 episode saw four contestants, Coral, Paparazzo, Fuzzy Peas, and Ant battle it out with performances inspired by the beloved animated franchise.
The night started with an unexpected treat, panel member Ken Jeong, dressed as Lord Farquaad, leading a playfully chaotic rendition of Smash Mouth's All-Star. Fellow judges Rita Ora, Robin Thicke, and Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg joined in, setting the tone for an evening of fairytale-themed performances.
By the end, Fuzzy Peas was unmasked and he turned out to be boxing superstar Oscar De La Hoya. The panel had made several guesses as to who could be behind the mask. Some of the guesses included Cesar Millan, Pitbull, and Antonio Banderas.
The judges were frantically trying to piece together a final clue involving a golf glove before he unmasked.
How did the performances go in Episode 2 of The Masked Singer?
The night began with Coral's performance of "Accidentally in Love" by Counting Crows. The sea creature's clue package revealed a romantic connection, comparing their love story to Shrek and Fiona's:
"When a spell was cast and I met this leading man I thought was totally cool, just like donkey did with Shrek, I forced him to be my friend."
Rita Ora admitted to being spellbound, while the panel's guesses included Dove Cameron, Hailee Steinfeld, and Lili Reinhart.
Paparazzo delivered the night's most touching moment with Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. Their clue package shared a powerful story about Robin Williams:
"He could tell I needed some guidance, so he sat me down and opened up about his own struggles."
Ken Jeong called the performance unexpectedly moving and said that it:
"gave me all the feels."
The panel speculated the photographer could be James Marsden, Seth Green, or Elijah Wood, particularly noting the clue about voice acting:
"Adults know me for my acting, but the kids know me for my voice."
Before his elimination from The Masked Singer, Fuzzy Peas charmed the audience with "I'm a Believer" by Smash Mouth.
The three-headed pea costume drew inspiration from Puss in Boots, noting they're:
"both scrappy, known to throw down in a fight, and oh so charming."
Robin Thicke dubbed it:
"the most fun performance of the night."
Ant came up with an emotional rendition of Katy Perry's "Wide Awake" in this episode of The Masked Singer.
"Like Princess Fiona, I too was trapped in a tower, frozen, isolated, because of someone else's dark motivations."
The performance brought Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg to tears. The Masked Singer panel's guesses for Ant included Kesha, Lindsay Lohan, and Evan Rachel Wood. They were particularly intrigued by the clue about two certified platinums.
A Shrek Forever After kind of night
The Masked Singer's ability to combine whimsy with real emotion was on full display in this episode. The concert honored Shrek's heart and comedy from Ken Jeong's opening act to De La Hoya's surprise. Even though the boxing champion was eliminated, his portrayal of Fuzzy Peas brought another unforgettable element to the show's expanding library of unexpected celebrity revelations. The remaining contestants will move forward in the competition. As Nick Cannon would say, the guessing game continues.
The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays on Fox and streams the next day on Hulu.
