Daredevil: Born Again actor Charlie Cox recently sat down for an interview with The New York Times' Kathryn Shattuck.
During the interview, the actor discussed various topics, including his personal preferences, reading habits, favorite football club, and even his absence from social media. However, the highlight of the interview was the actor's experience as Daredevil in the original Netflix show and the revival series.
The actor touched upon how he saw fellow actors Henry Cavill, Tom Hiddleston, and Andrew Garfield playing superhero roles and wished to play one himself, long before being cast as Daredevil in the Netflix series. He said:
“I just assumed that the Marvel call was not coming unless maybe for a villain in another 20 years.”
Daredevil: Born Again actor Charlie Cox's comments reveal a passion to be a part of the Marvel Universe:
Cox was cast as Marvel's The Man Without Fear for Netflix's Daredevil in May 2014. Charlie Cox and the rest of the Daredevil cast won viewers over immediately. The original series began in 2015 and ran for two more seasons, including one team-up series, The Defenders, which was released in 2017.
However, as 2018 began, Netflix canceled the series due to rights issues. Now that the series is being revived with Daredevil: Born Again, Cox, in the same The New York Times interview, expressed surprise and gratitude at being back as The Man Without Fear. He said:
“I’m still pinching myself if I’m honest.”
Furthermore, Cox shared that he would reprise his role as Daredevil as long as Marvel Studios wanted him after Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.
“That’s excellent; it means I’ve got another 20 years of this, or as long as they’ll have me.”
This was in reference to the currently popular three-issue Daredevil miniseries titled "Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell". This mini-series takes inspiration from comic book writer Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns and follows an elderly Matt Murdock whose heightened senses don't work anymore. Thus, Cox, who is 42 years old, expressed hope that he could play the old Matt Murdock almost 20 years later if he had the chance.
What is Daredevil: Born Again about?
Daredevil: Born Again follows a mourning Matt Murdock. The tragic loss of Foggy Nelson causes Matt to retire as the vigilante. However, he returns as Daredevil to counter the double threat of Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, who is the new mayor, and Muse, a serial killer who is also an artist.
The official synopsis of the series reads as follows:
"In Marvel Television’s 'Daredevil: Born Again', Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer with heightened abilities, is fighting for justice through his bustling law firm, while former mob boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) pursues his own political endeavors in New York. When their past identities begin to emerge, both men find themselves on an inevitable collision course."
Episodes 1 to 7 of Daredevil: Born Again are currently streaming on Disney+. Episode 8 will be streaming on April 8, 2025.
