The decision to recast Sauron in Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power in Season 2 is tied to it following the lore of J.R.R. Tolkien's universe. For the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, the showrunners include the character we already know is the creator of the rings – Sauron, but this time, we see him being played by Jack Lowden. This change in appearance is explained by the fact that Sauron is a shape-shifter.

Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 delves into its complex plot and visuals, including its take on the Dark Lord, Sauron. In the first season, we are introduced to the character portrayed by the actor, Charlie Vickers. He plays the role of Halbrand only to be unveiled as Sauron.

But, to fans’ amazement, the second season dropped, and a completely different actor, Jack Lowden, got into the role. Here is what we know about Sauroon's shape-shifting and what it means in the second season.

In Tolkien’s works, Sauron is described as an extremely powerful spirit, a Maia, who can shape-shift. He has the power to predetermine something and control its outcome. This ability is the main plot of his development throughout The Rings of Power books.

It is evidenced in the first episode of season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, where we find Sauron right after the defeat of his master, Morgoth. This is the time Sauron attempts to become the new leader of the Orcs. However, his attempt is stopped by Adar, and he gets stabbed, thus causing him to die temporarily. This is the reason for Sauron to transform, thus explaining why we see Jack Lowden as another actor playing this character.

The recasting, however, does emphasize the chameleonic aspects of Sauron’s personality. That is why, after he is defeated by Adar, Sauron feels the need to take on a new form as a survival tactic and a new strategy. This also prepares the viewers for his portrayal of Annatar in the second episode, a character that viewers familiar with Tolkien’s works will easily recognize.

This aspect of Sauron is an important part of who he is and has been utilized in various ways throughout Tolkien’s work. The series shows Sauron not as a supernatural being but as Halbrand, a man from the underworld who can easily manipulate both men and elves.

His disguise as Halbrand is a deliberate decision. He does not want anyone to see through the deception, especially if there are adversaries like Adar who would easily identify him.

As season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power continues, it explores Sauron's shapeshifting abilities. In the premiere episode, we are introduced to Jack Lowden’s version of Sauron, a form that’s more threatening than Halbrand. This form is employed to subjugate the Orcs, which, however, brings about his demise by Adar.

Sauron's actions through these forms are not only cunning but also clearly reveal the character of the Dark Lord in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Sauron’s ability to change shapes is not so much a magic button as it is his way of existing and exerting his control over Middle-earth. In Tolkien’s works, Sauron was initially a Maia linked to Aule the Smith, a being of great light, order, and beauty, before he fell into darkness. On the one hand, his shifting transformation is his want for control and, on the other hand, a way of avoiding defeat.

By appearing as Halbrand, Sauron influences characters such as Galadriel and Numenoreans, laying the foundations for constructing rings of power.

Recasting Sauron has also been effective in season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, helping to strengthen the connection between the show and Tolkien's works.

The recasting of Sauron in The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 is a work of creation and an element of the story. The prowess to change shape contributes to the development of Sauron’s personality and corresponds to his description and abilities, as highlighted by Tolkien.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power can be streamed on Prime Video.
