Netflix is well-known for its original series adaptation streak, whether it be a crime thriller, a horror, or a purely dramatic rendition. And now it is back again with yet another limited drama series, The Leopard, inspired by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's iconic 1958 novel going by the same identity.

The Leopard is set for an exclusive premiere on Netflix on March 5, 2025. Tom Shankland is at the helm of the project as Guiseppe Capotondi (a well-known Italian filmmaker) and Laura Luchetti join him to assist in the directing unit.

The premise of the story is set in Sicily, located in the Mediterranean, and the plot centers on the Prince of Salina, also known as Don Fabrizio Corbera, who is the protagonist of the show. Restructuring of the social order in 19th-century Italy poses a potential threat to Don Fabrizio's family aristocracy. However, to safeguard their traditional royal principles, Don must make a tough choice when it comes to relationships.

What is the plot of The Leopard?

The official synopsis of The Leopard, per IMDb, reads:

"A 19th-century Sicilian aristocratic family gets caught up in the changing sociopolitical times."

The plot starts to culminate as 1860s Sicily rages with revolution. Changes in social order are creating problems for big, aristocratic families, and the Prince of Salina, aka Don Fabrizio Corbera, stands in a challenging position.

Italy will be unified soon enough, and royal families like that of Don's must look for fresh ties in terms of loyalty to maintain their social stronghold. Standing amidst such a scenario, Don is forced to go to any length to preserve his family's sociopolitical hierarchy by starting new alliances (by marrying his nephew Tancredi to a beautiful girl named Angelica)—even if it requires hurting a close one's feelings (his own daughter Concetta).

Per Tudum, director Shankland has reportedly described the novel adaptation, tagging it as a "touching experience of family life.". His exact words were:

"I hope that people watch it and feel that it will give them a way of reflecting back on what is going on with all of us in the last few years, where we’ve had pandemics and crazy politics and all the rest of it. How do we survive as families — as humans — in that and what’s the most important thing? What can survive that? What changes, what doesn’t?"
