What is The Leopard about?

Netflix's new show, The Leopard, is an adaptation of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's timeless Italian novel of the same title. The story takes place in the tumultuous times of Italy's unification and the lives of the nobles during those times. The plot revolves around Don Fabrizio Corbera, the Prince of Salina, an aging and wealthy aristocrat who owns several properties across Sicily.

His life of comfort is put into jeopardy due to the invasion of Sicily in 1860 by Giuseppe Garibaldi. With Sicily on the brink of revolution and attacks from Garibaldi's Red Shirt, the aristocrat families like that of Don Fabrizio have to take some action to save themselves. In a twist of events, Trancendi joins Garibaldi's Red Shirt army. Trancendi, who is set to marry the Prince's eldest daughter Corbetta, falls in love with Angelica, the daughter of Donnafugata's mayor. The synopsis reads:

"Amid the unification of 1860s Italy, a Sicilisn prince grapples with collision between his family's ancient privilege and revolutionary change."

Director Shankland draws a parallel between a modern family and its upheavals to the condition of aristocrats in Sicily during the 1860s. He said:

"I hope that people watch it and feel that it will give them a way of reflecting back on what is going on with all of us in the last few years, where we've had pandemics and crazy politics and all the rest of it. How do we survive as families- as humans-in that and what's the most important thing? What can survive that? What changes, what dosen't."
