While The Last of Us Season 2 premiere brought the familiar characters of Pedro Pascal's Joel and Bella Ramsey's Ellie, many video game characters also debuted in Season 2, including Kaitlyn Dever's Abby.
While fans were eager to see how the TV show would adapt these new characters, there was much curiosity around Catherine O'Hara's character, who turned out to be Joel's therapist.
While HBO's TV show is adapted from a popular video game of the same name, it did include many original characters, such as Melanie Lynskey's Kathleen, Graham Greene's Marlon, Elaine Miles' Florence, and many more in Season 1. The show seems keen on continuing this trend, which is evident in O'Hara's character, who was not in the video games.
O'Hara's Gail is an original character created especially for The Last of Us Season 2, which will have a three-episode arc. The show will not stop here and many more original characters will debut in Season 2, including Alanna Ubach's Hanrahan, Ben Ahlers' Burton, and Hettienne Park's Elise Park.
More on Gail in The Last of Us Season 2 in our story.
Who is Gail in The Last of Us Season 2? Exploring O'Hara's original character
The Last of Us Season 2 premiere finally broke the silence and secrecy surrounding O'Hara's character, who was revealed to be Joel's therapist. Considering Joel's lie at the end of Season 1, Ellie was bound to know the truth someday, and it is assumed that is the reason behind their changed equation in the Season 2 premiere.
Considering Joel is visibly upset about how Ellie is no longer speaking to him, he is taking therapy sessions with Gail, a new and original character in The Last of Us Season 2.
The premiere featured a therapy session in which Gail accuses Joel of hiding the truth about his relationship with Ellie. While Joel wants Gail's help in mending his relationship with Ellie, he cannot reveal that she is immune, and he massacred the Firefly community in Season 1 to save her.
But Gail catches on to his lies and expresses her disappointment that if he is not honest with her, she cannot help him.
Exploring The Last of Us Season 2 Gail's potential ties with the video game
While Gail appears to be an original character, she does have connections to the video games, which is apparent after she mentions her husband Eugene's death. Eugene was a character in the video games who eventually died of a stroke. He was a lonely man estranged from his first wife and daughter.
While Eugene died of a stroke in the video game, Gail reveals that Joel killed her husband, and she still holds hatred against him for the act. While it is not hinted at, it can be assumed that Eugene was affected, and Joel killed him to save the community.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, O'Hara opens up about her character in The Last of Us Season 2:
"Imagine what she's taking in, absorbing all day long in that town. It's too much for anyone. Boy, you got to survive somehow''
Considering Gail's back story and disdain for Joel, it would be interesting to see her role in the show and what will come from Joel's therapy sessions.
