The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 3, titled "The Path", was largely uneventful, except for a major development: Ellie and Dina leave Jackson for Seattle to avenge Joel's shocking death at Abby's hands in last week's second episode, "Through the Valley". The episode opens with the immediate aftermath of Jackson's invasion as Tommy cleans up Joel's body in the morgue.

After that, the opening credits begin to play, but something surprising happens after the slightly altered opening credits. This episode of The Last of Us Season 2 sees a three-month time jump.

"After Dina shares crucial intel, Ellie prepares to petition the town council. Near Seattle, a religious group flees a war."

Here are some of the major events that happen in the 56-minute The Last of Us Season 2 episode:

  • Jackson is reeling from its double loss

It is important to note that Joel's death was sad last week; the town of Jackson experienced a gut punch in last week's The Last of Us Season 2 episode. That's because, in addition to losing the town's foreman, Jackson also lost a lot of its citizens last week after the devastating invasion of the infected. The closing moments of the previous episode made a point to show all the bit citizens getting shot.

Thus, after the opening credits, we see a three-month time jump, in which the town is getting rebuilt. The town is still reeling from that devastating invasion, but they are still mourning Joel, who was well-respected in the community. Thus, this episode also sees the entire town as a community convening a council vote on whether they should take action against Abby and her crew.

  • The Jackson Council takes a vote

The Jackson council is convened to vote on whether they should send a party of 16 patrolmen to Seattle to get justice for Joel. If the council votes yes, then those 16 people are authorized to execute Abby and her crew. Ellie makes a passionate speech trying to convince the council to vote yes. But the council ultimately votes against this proposal to focus on rebuilding the town.

However, Ellie gains a surprising ally in the form of Seth.

  • Ellie nonetheless chooses revenge

Regardless of the Jackson council's negative vote, Ellie decides to make good on her promise to kill Abby and her crew from the previous The Last of Us Season 2 episode. As she gets ready to leave Jackson, Dina offers to join Ellie on her quest to avenge Joel's death. She accepts Dina's offer, and they decide to leave Jackson at midnight.

The two are assisted by Seth to leave Jackson, and before she heads out, Seth and Ellie make peace for their scuffle in the first episode of The Last of Us Season 2.

  • New factions are introduced

Episode 3 of The Last of Us Season 2 also provided a glimpse at the different factions trying to take down FEDRA. In addition to fighting FEDRA, these factions are at war with each other. In this episode, we meet a new faction referred to as Seraphites, a group of humans using primitive tools and weapons. We learn that they treat the WLF (the same group Abby is a part of) as their rivals.

We see them hiding from an unseen faction at the beginning of the episode, and later in the last act, Ellie and Dina come across their bodies. The sight of their bodies has a visceral reaction on Dina as she vomits, making fans theorize that she might be pregnant with Jesse's child, like in the games.
