The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 2, was an emotionally charged hour of television, marked by one of the most brutal and devastating deaths of a main character. While video game players might have already anticipated this moment, it was still difficult to watch.
As Jackson prepares for a blazing snowstorm, Ellie and Joel go out on their respective patrol duties with Jesse and Dina. While Ellie and Jesse take shelter in an abandoned 7-11, Joel and Dina have a run-in with Abby, who lures them to her resort.
The episode ends with Abby brutally killing Joel, as Ellie sees her surrogate father's lifeless body lying on the floor.

The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2 recap: Abby finally meets Joel
The episode opens with Abby and her group, who are now living in a resort outside of Jackson. While they plan their next step, they realise that Jackson is far bigger than what they anticipated and heavily guarded. Abby leaves for patrol, likely to find Joel.
While on patrol, Abby sees two other patrolling people on horseback and decides to follow them. As she follows them and makes her way down to the mountain, the snow beneath her breaks and she comes across a nest of frozen infected. The ground underneath her keeps shifting and she sees many infected making their way to her.
She tries to crawl through a tunnel and finds a chain fence, but it is no match for the force with which the infected are making their way to her. As one of the infected gets on top of him, he is shot in the head by none other than Joel, who saves Abby.
After Dina calls for Joel, Abby finally realises that the man who just saved her is her father's killer. Since the snowstorm is too thick to return to Jackson, Abby convinces the duo to go to her friends' resort.
The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2 recap: Jackson is attacked by the infected
In The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2, Tommy and Maria prepare the people of Jackson for the worst after Ellie informed them about the smart infected. Tommy announces that children and the elderly should take shelter in their homes and if the worst happens, people should take refuge on their roofs.
The worst does happen, thanks to Abby's encounter with the infected and the infection spreading through the pipelines. Amidst a blazing snowstorm, Tommy and Maria prepare for the worst as an army of the infected makes their way to Jackson. As Maria shoots them with a rifle, Tommy uses his flamethrower to kill them.
A growling bloater clears away a large entrance and makes his way into the city and Tommy tries to lure him away from the people. He eventually reaches a dead-end and just when things weren't looking good for him, the bloater collapses and dies in front of him.
The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2 recap: The worst finally happens
As Joel and Dina make their way to the resort with Abby, they finally discover that the group was a part of the Fireflies. Since they do not believe in killing the innocent, Owen gives Dina a sedative that knocks her out for an hour. Abby asks Joel about the Fireflies and he tells the truth.
Pleased, she reveals that the unarmed doctor he killed was her father and she had to witness his brutal killing when she was just 19. Abby's revenge plan finally comes into motion as she takes a golf club and stabs Joel's leg. She asks Owen to bandage the leg so she can stab and torture him again.
Abby then repeatedly stabs and beats Joel's face till he is a bloodied piece of flesh. Ellie and Jesse also make their way to the resort and Abby stabs Joel in the neck, as Ellie watches. While Ellie cries for Joel, he takes his last few breaths and finally dies in Ellie's arms.
The episode ends with Ellie, Dina and Jesse arriving in Jackson with Joel's wrapped body.
