We learn that the since the Fireflies were looking for a cure and wanted to kill Ellie to create an antivirus, Joel killed all of them to save her. The research was headed by Dr. Jerry Anderson, Abby's father, and that is why she is hell-bent on taking revenge from him.
While the other fireflies want to move past this incident five years later, Abby is still hell-bent on taking revenge from Joel, and since she knows how he looks, she is adamant on finding and 'slowly' killing him.
She asks her new crew to help her find him and avenge her father's death. Towards the end of the episode, the crew is shown to be heading towards Jackson, where Joel and Ellie currently live.

While Ellie does not believe him completely, she agrees, and they continue their journey and reach Jackson.
Five years later, Ellie and Jackson have built a community with Tommy and Maria and are building more houses to accommodate more people. There is a visible falling out between Joel and Ellie, who do not speak with each other anymore. While the reason is not revealed, it is clear that Ellie somehow figured out Joel's lie.
Because of his falling out with Ellie, Joel is depressed and is taking therapy with Gail, a new therapist. During their session, she reveals that she is angry at him for killing her husband Eugene, but she knows he had no choice.
She asks him to open up about what he did to Ellie for her to help him completely. However, Joel says that he saved her and leaves the session abruptly.
