The new year just got merrier for The Last of Us fans since it's only a matter of months now till the second season is released. Neil Druckmann, the writer, executive producer, and co-creator of the show, revealed the release date as a new trailer was launched during Sony’s Consumer Electronics Show press conference.
As per the new trailer, The Last of Us Season 2 will be premiering in April 2025 and will consist of 7 episodes, which is 2 episodes fewer than the first season that had 9 episodes in total.
Since the trailer dropped, fans have been giving all sorts of reactions, and both the gamer and non-gamer fan bases of the show appear to be excited for the season to drop. Let us now explore the trailer in detail along with everything else that is known about The Last of Us Season 2.
The Last of Us Season 2 has launched a new trailer
The new trailer for The Last of Us Season 2 shows Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever, as a siren goes off in a hallway full of red light. The trailer itself is tense with various things happening at once, and the dangers that the first season presented seem to have increased in this season while bringing new troubles for Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey).
As Abby walks through the dark hallway with her pistol, she is heard to be saying,
“It doesn’t matter if you have a code like me. There are just some things everyone agrees are just wrong.”
These are the only dialogues in the trailer, and the whole sequence plays while this voiceover is heard. Besides all the violence and struggle for survival, the trailer also gives a glimpse into the new and budding romance between Ellie and Dina, played by Isabela Merced, who has been a new addition to the The Last of Us season 2 cast.
What can be expected from The Last of Us Season 2?
Based on The Last of Us video game franchise by Naughty Dog, the show presents a post-apocalyptic world where people are turned into zombies because of the outbreak of a fungal-like infection that caused a global pandemic. The main focus of the series is on Joel and Bella, as they make a journey through this world and try to survive.
The Last of Us Season 1 covered the events that happened in the The Last of Us 2013 video game and The Last of Us: Left Behind (2014). Season 2 will be covering The Last of Us Part II, which shows events that are happening after a gap of several years from the first part of the game.
Judging from the trailer and the way season 1 had ended, The Last of Us Season 2 is likely to focus on the new complications that Joel and Bella have to face, especially after Joel did not let Bella go through the surgery that could have saved mankind but would have harmed her in the process.
Season 2 will feature the familiar faces of Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Rutina Wesley, and Gabriel Luna, along with new members including Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Ariela Barer, Young Mazino, Tati Gabrielle, and Danny Ramirez, to name a few. Catherine O'Hara is also a part of the season 2 cast, playing the role of Joel's therapist, a character that is not in the video game.
The Last of Us Season 1 can be streamed on Max.
