Netflix’s latest Spanish period drama, The Lady’s Companion, takes us straight into the heart of 1880s Madrid, where romance, reputation, and high society collide.
The story follows Elena Bianda, a clever and determined woman who makes a living helping wealthy young ladies find suitable husbands. Think Bridgerton with a Spanish twist—full of elegance, secrets, and forbidden desires. But with its own unique charm and a slightly more grounded take on love and class.
Played by Nadia de Santiago, Elena is known for being a highly respected chaperone. She's highly experienced in morally guiding upper-class ladies to find their partners. But when she takes on a new job with the Mencía family, things get complicated in ways she didn’t expect.
As The Lady's Companion series begins, Elena is brought in by Don Pedro Mencía to look after his three daughters: Cristina, Sara, and Carlota. Like most of the siblings, these sisters are quite different from each other and barely fit into the neat boxes society expects of them.
Elena isn't just hired to help them find the best spouse, but to also maintain order and protect the young ladies' reputation. As Elena gets involved in the family, she starts finding it difficult to stick to her usual strict approach.
She unexpectedly develops feelings for Santiago, Don Pedro’s godson. This connection adds tension in their lives as Elena isn't supposed to like him. Not only this, but one of her biggest secrets is also revealed by the end of The Lady's Companion Season 1.

The Lady's Companion ending explained: Elena's good intentions backfire

As explained earlier, Elena takes on the job of a chaperone for stability. Usually, she keeps herself from forming close bonds with her clients, but when it came to the Mencía sisters, Elena started genuinely caring for them.
She didn't just try to hide the eldest daughter, Cristina's unplanned pregnancy but also defended Sara’s ambition to study medicine. But the same actions Elena takes to protect the girls and earn the family's trust end up backfiring.
Once the truth comes out, they’re seen as lies and manipulation. What seals her downfall is a secret Elena had hoped would stay buried. As The Lady's Companion Season 1 nears its end, it's revealed that she had researched the Mencía family before applying for the job.
The sisters are deeply hurt, so much so that Cirstina even slaps Elena in The Lady’s Companion Episode 8. The Mencía family takes Elena's research as a sign of manipulation rather than preparation, and the trust she had built with the sisters is also shattered.

Cristina reveals her pregnancy with Eduardo to her father

The Lady's Companion Season 1 might bring a sad ending for Elena, but Cristina finally found her love. As seen in the previous episodes, she was intimate with Eduardo, which resulted in her pregnancy.
While Elena knew about this, Cristina's father was completely unaware until the very end. Since Cristina had been faking love for Santiago, Pedro believed his daughter wanted to marry him.
However, Elena encouraged Cristina to reveal the truth before it was too late. As a result, Cristina tells her father that she's carrying Eduardo's baby and only wishes to marry him.
Pedro initially fainted after listening to his eldest daughter, but eventually announced Cristina's wedding with Eduardo in The Lady's Companion finale. The sisters are happy to achieve what they wanted to, but at the same time, they feel bad about Elena's secret.
Elena's final attempt to unite with Santiago in The Lady's Companion

Now that Elena's secret had come out, she ended up getting fired from her job. To add salt to the wound, her rival Alicia is brought in to take her place as the sisters' new chaperone. It's unclear whether this new lady will support the sisters’ dreams the way Elena did. Or if their freedom will be at risk.
Elena then learns that Santiago will be out for two months in Lisbon and realizes she must express her true feelings to him. Cristina plays a part in encouraging her, and Elena finally attempts to stop Santiago.
However, there's no romantic reunion, but silence and disappointment. Elena and Santiago's relationship, just like her career, is left unresolved. The chaperone feels heartbroken as she says:
"He didn't stop. He left. What kind of love story is this? So now I have no job and no home. I lost everything."
This way, Elena's love story with Santiago ends in The Lady's Companion Season 1, but her journey isn't over yet. The Netflix series will return with Season 2, bringing back Elena with a potential for her to rebuild her professional reputation and perhaps earn Santiago’s love once more.
