The Handmaid's Tale slows down in Episode 4 to create anxiety for what comes next. June is dealing with poor ties with her husband, Luke, and her friend, Moira, as they prepare to take down Gilead. Despite the allegations against him, Luke chooses to join Mayday and work secretly to eliminate the Commanders of Gilead.

However, June is adamant about protecting her loved ones and believes that the mission is too dangerous. Meanwhile, Rita travels to New Bethlehem to meet her sister again and Commander Lawrence is promoted for his work in New Bethlehem, although it remains unclear what his true allegiances are.

In The Handmaid's Tale Season 6, Episode 5, June and Moira go undercover at Jezebel's to rescue Janine and carry out the Mayday plan. When they learn that the Commanders are paying a surprise visit, their objective becomes complicated. June and Moira rapidly adjust, but things get dangerous when they meet a nasty guardian. In self-defense, they are compelled to kill him, making their escape even more difficult. They hide his body to buy time, but their strategy is already jeopardized.

June, meanwhile, starts to doubt Commander Lawrence more. Despite having contributed to the founding of New Bethlehem, Lawrence is currently involved in a scheme to assassinate the Commanders and undermine Gilead's authority. June worries that his scheme is faulty and might not work, endangering everyone—especially the women at Jezebel's.

Serena unexpectedly consents to marry Commander Wharton, which could alter her course in Gilead. As the protagonists attempt to survive in their perilous environment, the episode emphasizes the growing tensions and difficult decisions they must make.
