The Netflix series The Gardener ended on a rather strange note for a limited series. A limited series is exactly what the word suggests: limited, often to one season. But The Gardener ends with two cliffhangers, and viewers need answers.

The Gardener has six episodes, and while the last one does sum up the story, it leaves a few questions unanswered. Who does Violeta want killed by Elmer? Whose bones are found in the bag on the beach?

We don't know if there's going to be a second season of this show, but a second season is definitely required to answer these pressing questions!

The Gardener's ending

The Gardener is a story about a mother-and-son duo, La China Jurado and Elmer, who run an odd business. They kill people for money and then bury the bodies in their garden, which acts as fertilizer. A key part of the story is that Elmer can not feel emotions. This is one of the very few shows about a serial killer who quite literally can not feel, and thus, it doesn't affect his moral consciousness.

Elmer's first kill was his father, Tony. Tony was abusive, and thus, Elmer and his mother, China, ran away from him. After that, they went through a car accident, which caused Elmer to lose the ability to feel emotions. When Tony finds them, Elmer kills him to save his mother from her abuser. China realized killing didn't affect Elmer and pushed him into a life of crime.

The Gardener takes us to that point in Elmer's life when he suddenly starts to feel emotions, that too, for a woman he has to kill. Sabela Costeira hires China and Elmer to kill Violeta. The reason? She believes Violeta killed her son, Xoan. Elmer gets to know Violeta so he can eventually kill her, but they end up falling in love instead.

To say the last episode of the series is eventful would be an understatement. A lot happens. Although the police find evidence of bodies buried in Elmer and China's garden, China and Orson remove them before the police can arrest them with a warrant. China hires Orson to kill Violeta, but Violeta kills him in self-defense instead and calls Elmer to help. Elmer helps Violeta take care of the body and makes Orson's death look like a suicide. Violeta bids goodbye to Elmer and returns to meet her friends one last time before leaving town.

Elmer confronts his mother for trying to get Violeta killed. He also offers her money to buy back her house in Mexico in an attempt to make her stop controlling his life. But China isn't a mother that listens. She doesn't want to lose her son to Violeta, but she doesn't want to give up control. Thus, she hits Elmer in the head, which makes him unconscious. She then makes him undergo surgery to get rid of the tumor that was making him feel emotions.

The Gardener ends with the old Elmer returning, the one who doesn't feel.

However, he doesn't look too happy with his mother. He continues working in the garden and continues to be a serial killer. We see Violeta return after a while and ask Elmer to kill someone for her. The series ends with him asking her whom to kill.

The ending of The Gardener leaves us with the same question as Elmer. Who does Violeta want dead? It could be China since she tried to get Violeta killed. However, asking China's son to kill her would be strange, no matter how much Elmer might think he was wronged by her.

Violet lies about killing Xoan, but she did kill him. She also killed Orson. Maybe she wants to hire Elmer to kill Carrera or Torres. They might start investigating Orson's murder again, which might lead them to her. It could be a way she wants to protect herself. All we can do now is guess until Netflix releases a second season, which they might not.

A last, yet important cliffhanger is the bag of bones Carrera finds on Pedras Negras Beach. Whose bones are these? And who would be stupid enough to dump them in the sea of all places? Again, we do not know. Maybe somebody else knows about China's business and somehow sent the police a lead. Orson and China removed the bodies from the garden, and maybe Orson dumped them carelessly into a river that washed up on the beach.

There has been no confirmation of a second series for The Gardener. But we hope the series gets a second season to answer all the questions it left hanging at the end.

The Gardener is currently streaming on Netflix.
