Want a peep inside the chaos of superhero movie-making? HBO's brand new comedy series, The Franchise, might tick all the boxes for cinema lovers. Through its various running gags, the series captures the behind-the-scenes of moviemaking.

It was created by Sam Mendes and Armando Iannucci and premiered on Sunday, October 7, 2024. It is also available on HBO's official streaming site, Max. The show can also be considered a humorous satire on Hollywood as a ''dysfunctional crew'' tries to bring together the next superhero franchise's next instalment.

The chaotic world of superhero movie-making and various mishaps off-set will contribute to the major gags in this comedic series.

The first episode of The Franchise is out. Sam Mendes directed it, and Jon Brown, who is also a creative and executive producer of the show, wrote it. The show stars Himesh Patel as Daniel, Aya Cash as Anita, Lolly Adefope as Dag, Darren Goldstein as Pat, Jessica Hynes as Steph, Billy Magnussen as Adam, and Isaac Powell as Bryson.

Recurring guest stars include Richard E. Grant as Peter and Daniel Brühl as Eric. The show will follow weekly releases of episodes, similar to many other HBO shows.

The Franchise, through its eight episodes, will show what every movie enthusiast always wants to see. The madness and chaos behind making a movie. The first episode itself felt like being transported to a giant film set with the crew barely able to keep it together.

Some memorable gags from the first episode included Daniel dealing with a drunk Gary the Boom guy, a 'fish man's' very dramatic panic attack, a surprise visit from studio chief Pat Shannon. The bomb drops when the already dysfunctional group learns about cost-cutting for their movie.

Since The Franchise follows the behind-the-scenes of a superhero film, there is no doubt that the movie might have callbacks to the MCU and the DC. When asked about this, Sam Mendes said,

I was talking to Jay Russo just the other day and I recommended he tune in and have a laugh.

He also added that ''imitation is the sincerest form of flattery'' and that the audience is genuinely interested in taking a peek at how their favourite superhero movies are made.

According to the release schedule, The Franchise will air episodes 2 and 3 on October 13 and October 24, 2024, respectively, at 10 p.m. EST.

The first episode of The Franchise did a great job of introducing the characters and setting the series' tone. In the next two episodes, viewers can expect a further exploration of the characters and their progress as a crew.

We might also see some characters' personal journeys as they juggle competition and ambition in the cut-throat industry. Episodes 2 & 3 might also offer a glimpse into the characters' personal relationships, both romantic and platonic, with each other.
