The Eternaut is the latest Argentine sci-fi thriller show on Netflix. Although an official release date is yet to be announced, The Eternaut is expected to be available on the streaming platform sometime in 2025. The Eternaut is based on the popular graphic novel El Eternauta, a landmark Latin American literature piece. The novel was written by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and illustrated by Francisco Solano López.

Drawing largely upon the graphic novel, The Eternaut is poised to be the first audio-visual adaptation of the original material. El Eternauta appeared serially from 1957 to 1959 and was published in a single volume for the first time in 2015.

The Eternaut takes viewers to a post-apocalyptic world in which a strange snowfall has wiped out almost the entire population of Buenos Aires. Amidst the destruction and the chaos, a survivor, Juan Salvo, emerges as the leader of the masses. In a desperate bid for survival and to reunite with his family, Salvo comes to be known as The Eternaut, or the leader of the resistance who travels through time.

As revealed by Tudum, Buenos Aires has only experienced snowfall three times in recorded history. The show begins when snowflakes start to fall, covering the earth. It's gorgeous but unsettling. Something is horribly wrong with this weather.

Anyone touched by the snowflakes dies instantaneously, resulting in millions of fatalities. As survivors emerge, one of them, Juan Salvo, is determined to fight back against this unseen power. The snow is the prelude to an alien attack. The ensuing chaos calls for some high-octane drama.

Bruno Stagnaro is the creator of the Netflix show and has written it along with Ariel Staltari. Stagnaro recently shared an emotional note with Netflix while commenting on the significance of the story to him:

"For me, El Eternauta represents my father bringing me the comics every week. I believe it was one of the first things I read in its entirety in my life, at the age of 10, and it had a profound impact on my way of understanding fiction made in my country. I think that part of the charm of making El Eternauta is understanding how to overcome the technical difficulty involved in building the world in which it happens. This will be an unusual challenge for our industry, and that motivates me a lot, because I believe it can set a precedent on facing this type of project in our country."

He further added:

"My approach to the adaptation will be to be faithful to that child reader who looked at the story for the first time, trying to reconstruct the genuine emotion of living an adventure in the corner of the neighborhood and the construction of that great Argentine hero who is Juan Salvo."

The Eternaut will be exclusively available on Netflix.
