Yellowstone centers around the Dutton family who are the owners of Montana’s largest ranch. The Duttons are extremely committed to their family and with spin-offs like 1923 and 1883 the family tree might seem confusing at times.
The Yellowstone timeline, however, runs pretty clearly, with John Dutton and his children being the protagonists of Taylor Sheridan’s neo-western drama. However, the family tree gets a little unclear when it comes to explaining the relationship between 1923 and 1883 Duttons and John Dutton III.
Moreover, the character of Harrison Ford, who is the protagonist of 1923 does not have direct ancestry with Kevin Costner’s John Dutton III. This essentially messes up the direct lineage narrative presented with James Dutton (Tim McGraw) in 1883.
However, as already mentioned, the family of Yellowstone is relatively less complicated to understand if the spin-offs are not taken into account. Let us now explore the central characters of Yellowstone to have a better understanding of the Dutton family tree.
Yellowstone Family tree explored in depth
John Dutton III
The central narrative of Yellowstone focuses on John Dutton (Kevin Costner), the current patriarch of the Dutton household. He is the biological father of Beth, Lee, and Kyce whom he had with his late wife Evelyn. He also has an adopted son named Jamie.
Beth Dutton
Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) is the second child of John Dutton and his only daughter. Beth is married to Rip Wheeler, the current manager of the ranch. Her character is portrayed as a strong and fierce woman who has some serious issues with Jamie, her adopted brother.
Lee Dutton
John Dutton III’s eldest child is Lee Dutton (Dave Annable) and he is the first member of the 6th generation of Duttons’ seven-generation family. Lee’s character is killed off tragically in the very first season of Yellowstone as he gets into a confrontation with members of the Broken Rock Reservation.
Jamie Dutton
Garrett Randall’s biological son, Jamie (Wes Bently) has a complex relationship with John and Evelyn. Randall had allegedly killed Jamie’s birth mother and eventually was murdered by Jamie.
Jamie also shares a strained relationship with John after he left him out of his inheritance. This decision made Jamie and Beth’s relationship even worse. As shown in Yellowstone Season 5, Jamie orchestrates John’s killing with the help of a new villain, Sarah Atwood.
Tate Dutton
Tate (Brecken Merrill) happens to be the youngest of the Dutton clan. A bi-racial child, Tate culminates over a century of uneasiness that has lasted between the Duttons and the native Americans.
While it is not sure if the Yellowstone storyline will go to the point of Tate taking over the ranch, his ownership would mean some cultural progression and significance.
Kyce Dutton
John and Evelyn’s youngest child, Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) followed his father’s footsteps and is shown to be the Montana Livestock Commissioner. Kyce initially got distant from his father because of him marrying Monica, a Broken Rock Reservation woman.
However, since John wanted to build a good relationship with Tate, his grandson, the father-son duo reconciled. After John’s death in Yellowstone, Kyce gets together with Beth to ensure that they find their father’s killer and punish them.
Besides Tate, Kyce had another son named John Dutton IV. The child, however, died unfortunately at childbirth.
Yellowstone can be streamed on Netflix.
