The elephant monster's mystery is solved in The Edge of Sleep finale
Dave has suffered from terrifying and recurring dreams since his childhood in The Edge of Sleep. These dreams combine death, violence, an obscure equilateral triangle, and a grotesque elephant monster.
After the Dream Pandemic, Dave finally decides to venture deep into his dreams and face this elephant monster himself. In opposition to this horrifying being, Dave's dreams also had a cult of strange attire-clad beings called the Dream People who advised him to take refuge in the mystical island of Aristera to escape the monster.
After Dave, Matteo, Linda, and Katie begin their journey to the island, Katie succumbs to sleep. As the trio dives deep into their dream, the monster's presence intensifies their vicious psychic torment. But Dave eventually overcomes these afflictions and is welcomed by the Dream People with Matteo and Linda.
He learns the true meaning behind the elephant monster, a metaphysical demonic avatar of evil that feeds on people in their dreams in various forms. It can be best linked to the dream god Phobetor in Greek Mythology, who appeared in different animal forms in people's dreams.
While most people go insane with this ever-present monster in their dreams, people like Dave fight till the end and reach the Dream People.
The importance of the whale in The Edge of Sleep
Unlike the elephant monster, representing evil, the whale protects humanity in the dream realm. While whales are considered majestic and enigmatic creatures in many cultures, considering them as a symbol of humanity's protection is deeply rooted.
Besides the whale, the equilateral triangle Dave sees in his dream symbolizes protection. It is a metaphor for the Holy Trinity and an order of the Three.
Do the Dream Chambers hint at a possibility of The Edge of Sleep Season 2?
Dream Chambers, created by Dr. Castenada, play an important role in The Edge of Sleep, which helps monitor and influence people in their dreams. Although it is expected that this could lead to Dave finding some answers to his dreams, the beast kills Castenada by controlling Dave's dream.
Castenada's death might have hindered the exploration of dream chambers, but their introduction this season could hint at their impact in the upcoming season (if there is one). Since the show is centered around dreams, a dream chamber that can influence people inside a dream would make sense for the next season.
Similarly, the nature of Modafalyst pills and how they can prolong dreams is another question unanswered in The Edge of Sleep. It will be interesting to see the show answer these questions in the next season.
