Following the success of The Diplomat season 2, it wasn't a wonder when Netflix announced a renewal of the show in early November this year. According to reports from the streaming platform giant, the production for The Diplomat season 3 is already underway. Debora Cahn is the showrunner, creator, and executive producer of The Diplomat and she recently commented about what the third season of the popular political thriller show might revolve around. She stated:

"Season 3 flips the chessboard, in Season 3, Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want.”

This statement has since then gone on to give rise to speculations that the pivotal character of Kate Wyler might be poised to finally have a shot at the seat of the Vice President on The Diplomat season 3. It isn't clear what exactly Kate might get that she wanted and the way in which it might turn out to be a nightmare.

Although there hasn't been any official confirmation in this direction from Netflix, and the official plot synopsis for the third season is yet to be released, audiences can expect Kate Wyler to play a role of increased importance in the upcoming season. Here's everything that we know.

Will Kate Wyler become the next Vice President on The Diplomat season 3?

Kate Wyler was initially sent out to the U.K. as part of a diplomatic mission but the real reason behind her being in London was part of the process of her being considered for the Vice Presidency of the United States. She was being vetted for the second-in-command's chair and at first she seemingly was unaware that her movements and activities were being closely scrutinised.

Although Kate remained opposed to the idea of becoming the Vice President, she eventually came around and by the finale of The Diplomat season 2, audiences saw the character dressing up and interacting with others in the way of aspiring to the job. However, it can be said that the idea of being Vice President to President Rayburn might have seemed appealing to her. Unfortunately, with President Rayburn's death on The Diplomat season 2, former Vice President Grace Penn is set to assume the chair.

The third season might likely kick off with Penn as the new President. It is interesting to note that although Grace Penn and Kate Wyler shared a brief professional chemistry, there was a rift between them two after Wyler found out about Penn's ruse to attack a U.K. vessel to suit her own interests. As she's now the President, Penn might bring up Wyler to the Vice Presidency in order to keep a close eye on her and to prevent her from spilling her secret.

Keri Russell opens up on The Diplomat season 3

Keri Russell, who plays the character of Kate Wyler, recently spoke about the third season on Netflix's Skip Intro podcast. She commented:

"We’re shooting some stuff already in Season 3 that involves big groups and lots of people, and we do tend to rehearse those (scenes). It’s such rapid-fire diplomatic speak that we make sure that everyone’s on the same page and knows what we’re actually talking about.”

The second season of the show had a reduced duration of six episodes and this will no longer be the case with the upcoming third season, as has been confirmed by Cahn herself, adding that the third season will consist of eight episodes.
