Fans of The Diplomat can now rejoice with Season 2 of the political drama slated for a Halloween release on October 31, 2024. Netflix dropped the highly anticipated trailer for Season 2, which explores the aftermath of Season 1.

Golden Globe Winner Keri Russell reprises her role as the prime protagonist, Kate Wyler, a diplomat for the American Government. This Season is expected to be more explosive and intense, with multiple subplots brewing in the background.

Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum, after the series was confirmed to return earlier this year, showrunner Debora Cahn teased the show’s primary storyline about Russell’s character “proving,” the first explosive attack.

The show’s executive producer and protagonist Russell also expressed her thoughts on returning to the show saying,

“I am thrilled to be headed back for another round of this smart screwball show. Dare I say it’s fun?”

While the meaning of Russell’s comment will only be disclosed after the new season drops, take a look at what major stuff went down in Season 1, before gearing up to binge on Season 2!

Who was responsible for the explosion of the British Aircraft in Season 1 of The Diplomat?

Season 1 of The Diplomat began on a rather cordial note which quickly snowballed into chaos after the explosion of a British Aircraft - The HMS Courageous carrying 25 Royal Navy members exploded off Iran’s coast.

As an act of sympathy and allegiance, President Rayburn assigned Kate Wyler to investigate and get to the bottom of the person, people, or country responsible for the tragedy; she’s an ambassador of The US.

The entire first season sees Kate endure tense and tumultuous conversations and situations in an attempt to probe the matter and solve the case as diplomatically as possible.

After engaging with several other diplomats including UK foreign secretary Austin Dennison, she knew something sinister was brewing in the background.

After the blame shuffled between Iran and Russia, Kate and Dennison discovered two people were responsible for the explosion of the British carrier: Russian assassin Lenkov and British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge.

It was Dennison who suspected Trowbridge’s involvement with the case and informed Kate who further connected the dots. While he revealed Trowbridge’s plan to kill his co-conspirator, Kate was concerned about saving her husband, and other officials with him.

How did Season 1 of The Diplomat end?

Season 1 of The Diplomat came full circle with an epic conclusion with a second explosion - a total cliffhanger leaving several people's fate undecided. After the regalia, Kate stepped out for a breather with Dennison only to banter with him.

Upon conferring with him they both realize the British Prime Minister was the mastermind behind the tragic explosion from the pilot episode. Moreover, he’d conspired with Lenkov - the leader of a Russian Mercenary group to fund and execute the tragedy.

Just before she could continue to pursue the matter or run towards where her husband Hal Wylar, Deputy Chief of Mission Stuart Hayford, Office Clerk Ronnie, and MP Merrit Grove were to inform them, their car exploded!

With a raging fire before her and her possible soon-to-be ex-husband potentially dead, the series ended without answering any of those questions.

Is Hal Wyler alive after the explosion in Season 1 of The Diplomat?

Yes, Hal Wyler is still alive at the end of Season 1 of The Diplomat. While Season 1 didn’t disclose the status of his well-being, the new trailer for Season 2 confirmed Hal’s existence. In the snippets, Kate was seen rushing into the hospital in the wake of the second explosion.

She hurried toward a hospital worried about her husband’s life - only to find him in a mangled state. Hal was seen pretty banged up with cuts and bruises across his face and it appears he’s incurred a limp causing him difficulty walking. Their marriage is presently in shambles and maybe at the end of the rope.

Season 1 saw Kate and Hal bickering and having intense arguments. This caused her to seriously consider ending her non-viable marriage with Hal. However, their fate as a couple will be unraveled in Season 2 of The Diplomat.
