The Diplomat Season 2 recently ended on a thunderous note. Through myriad twists and turns, the finale of The Diplomat Season 2 saw Kate Wyler going from someone who was just a diplomat navigating the corridors of power to someone who is now being considered for the Vice Presidency of the United States.
Although she doesn't become the President, it can be said for sure that her position in the world of international politics is now poised to assume greater significance.
The Diplomat season 2 commenced with Kate Wyler being sent to the United Kingdom as an American ambassador. Upon her arrival in the UK, she is quickly engulfed by a rising crisis involving a severe attack on a British aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf.
As she tries to navigate her way through the crisis, both Kate and the audience discover that appearances are misleading in the world of politics. Initially it is believed that the attack was solely planned and executed by a Russian mercenary. However, the finale revealed something quite contrary.
Despite being sent to the UK as a career diplomat turned ambassador, Kate Wyler's real purpose is to be vetted for high office in the American state apparatus.
The Diplomat Season 2 finale details revealed
Upon learning of the attack on the British warship, The Diplomat star Kate Wyler initially believes what is revealed to her, like everyone else, that a Russian mercenary called Roman Lenkov is behind the attack.
However, circumstances soon change after Margaret 'Meg' Roylin, a right-winger and former advisor to the British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge claims that she was the one who conspired the attack with the aim of having the nation rally behind the PM, and put an end to Scotland's secessionist aspirations.
The twist doesn't stop here and during The Diplomat season 2 finale it is revealed that Margaret Roylin is just a patsy and the real conspirator behind the attack was Grace Penn, the sitting Vice President of the United States. Although Kate is swept by the revealation, there's little that she can do.
She later lets Grace know that the secret is out. Grace faces up to her and reasons that Scotland occupies a strategic importance in the larger sceheme of things as it contains Britain's nuclear warheads and is the only place where American nuclear submarines can dock in case of a possible conflict in the future.
The Diplomat showrunner opens up on the twist
The Diplomat comes from seasoned showrunner Debora Cahn who has such legacy shows like The West Wing and Homeland to her credit. Speaking to Tudum by Netflix about the second season and how the thrilling twist was developed, she stated:
"We spent all of this season trying to figure out which Brits are involved, and then we find out that the root of the problem is actually us; it’s an American thing."
Debora further went on to speak about the future of Kate Wyler's character and her wish to become the next VP:
"The dynamic that we’re playing with Kate, is that she doesn't see herself as being able to cross the gulf between who she is and what that job is, and doesn’t want to be so presumptuous as to grab for a position of that much power. Hopefully, over time, we see her ability to move past that insecurity in herself."
She continued,
"As she gets closer to the world of the job, she’s getting a better sense that nobody’s doing it perfectly. It’s humans who do these jobs. The lady who’s in there right now has her own flaws. We don’t find some superhero to go and be president. You find somebody who is good in some ways, and terrible in some, and does their best in the moment, for the most part."
The Diplomat is available exclusively on Netflix.
