The Cage is a five-part French show on Netflix that tells the story of Taylor Keita, an aspiring MMA fighter. The show takes the viewer on a journey through the world of French underground boxing and chronicles the struggles of Taylor Keita in his bid to reach the hallowed ranks of the UFC.

Although Taylor starts out as a struggling fighter, ravaged by his condition in life and the emotional manipulation of his mother, Isabelle, he works his way to the top through his unrelenting nature.

Through most of the important events in Taylor's life, as depicted by The Cage, his family issues have significantly impacted his life course. Ever since the beginning, we are told that all Taylor wants is a degree of love and appreciation from his mother Isabelle. However, she is dismissive of her son's career choice and has no interest in his MMA ambitions. All she wants is to chisel off money from her son so that she and her partner Regis can lead a comfortable life at his cost.

Despite the ill-fated presence of an abusive and manipulative mother, there are other supportive characters in Taylor's life, like his coach, Boss, who play a determining role.

Taylor Keita's family issues from The Cage explored

The Cage starts by depicting Taylor Keita in his element. He is an amateur French MMA fighter who dreams of making it big on UFC one day, much like Georges St-Pierre, whom he idolizes.

From an early age, Taylor realized that MMA was more than a pastime for him as he lacked conventional education, having spent most of his time not in the classroom but in the gym. He learned Muay Thai for four years and spent another three years in the gym, yet his coach Boss won't approve of him.

After landing an unexpected opportunity to fame after he knocked out title-holding fighter Ibrahim Ibarra in a sparring match, Taylor shot to fame overnight. He then went to Canada to train for an official contest with Ibrahim at the Octagon. Upon coming back to his home, he is pressured by Isabelle and Regis to accept the match with Ibrahim readily.

Taylor agrees to the match on The Cage, with Boss backing him as his coach. Isabelle and Regis have placed heavy bets on Taylor going down and losing. During the first couple of rounds, Taylor does try to take a beating by being on the defensive.

It seems like he would lose in the second round to keep his promise to his mother. But Taylor's fire soon kicks in, and he knocks down Ibrahim. Regis and Isabelle lose their money, and upon returning home, they reveal to Taylor that Regis is in debt with certain people who would hurt Isabelle if the loan wasn't paid off in a month.

Eventually, Isabelle betrays Taylor after she takes all his money and goes away with Regis.

What happened to Boss on The Cage?

When Ibrahim threatens to cause harm to Taylor's career, Boss steps in with evidence from Ibrahim's past to hold him in check. Ibrahim is Boss's former student, and during the time he trained at Boss's gym in the past, he had brutally assaulted a woman.

Fearing that his past deeds might see the light of day, Ibrahim has his men stab Boss during a scuffle at the match venue after Boss cancels Taylor's participation. Due to this incident, Boss goes into a coma.

Later, after training in Mexico, when Taylor has the final battle with Ibrahim, he takes revenge for what Ibrahim did to Boss. This is because Boss was the only supportive figure in Taylor's life. Taylor eventually wins and becomes the ARES champion only to be betrayed by his loyal friend, Niko.
