Young Sheldon once featured a cameo by Kaley Cuoco that many fans failed to notice. The actress, who shot to fame by playing Penny in The Big Bang Theory, made an uncredited appearance in a 2019 episode of the prequel series.

This made her the second main cast member from the original series to appear in the spin-off, as Jim Parsons had already been serving as the narrator of Young Sheldon. However, Cuoco did not make a physical appearance in the show. Instead, she voiced an unusual character: a pool.

The sitcom’s fans would remember that in season 3, episode 10, Teenager Soup and a Little Ball of Fib, Sheldon was scared of taking a swimming class. In a nightmare, he saw a swimming pool, which talked to him and traumatized him even further. The pool was interestingly voiced by Kaley Cuoco.

The Young Sheldon Season 3 Episode 10, which aired on December 12, 2019, featured a hilarious conversation between a swimming pool and Sheldon in a nightmare. The protégé was afraid of going into the water, but the pool pulled him in after explaining its pH level, and chlorine protects it from bacteria.

The pool’s dialogs were voiced by Kaley Cuoco, marking her return to the franchise after the conclusion of The Big Bang Theory. However, the cameo was uncredited, and the creators did not even promote Cuoco’s appearance to draw in more viewers for the episode.

Series co-creator Steve Molaro then reflected on the move a few months later in an interview with TVLine. He said he wanted the pool to be played by a female actress who had a sensuous voice and thought Cuoco would be the ideal fit for the part:

“That was absolutely the voice of Kaley as pool water. I needed someone to do the voice. I knew I wanted it to be female and kinda sexy, and I said, ‘Well, duh! Kaley is perfect for this.’”

Molaro added that he just called Cuoco and narrated the scene to her, and she graciously agreed to play the role. Talking about why the cameo was not promoted and was let go unnoticed, the co-creator said it was a conscious decision, as Cuoco also wanted to keep it a secret:

“Sometimes I feel a little weird about things being over-promoted, and as awesome as it was, I don’t know that that should be the kind of thing that appears in promos.”
“[Cuoco] wanted to hold it under wraps [as well], so that if you figured it out, that was a little Easter egg for you, so we were all on the same page about that.”

Cuoco played the role of Penny across all 12 seasons of The Big Bang Theory. During the course of the show, she went from being an aspiring actress to a pharmaceutical sales representative. She eventually fell in love with Leonard and got married to him. The CBS series also starred Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, and Mayim Bialik.

Young Sheldon, on the other hand, told the story of the childhood days of the genius and revolved around his family members. The spin-off starred Iain Armitage in the lead, along with Zoe Perry, Montana Jordan, Lance Barber, Raegan Revord, Annie Potts, and Emily Osment.

Young Sheldon is available to stream on Max and Netflix.
