Lanterns is an up-and-coming TV show that belongs to the new and refurbished DC cinematic universe being spearheaded by DC co-chairman James Gunn. Lanterns will primarily feature the entire Green Lantern Corps as an intergalactic police force working to keep superpowered villains in check. Poorna Jagannathan is slated to play an important supporting role in the show.

While promoting her Hulu series called Deli Boys at the Sundance Film Festival, Jagannathan spilled a few exclusive details from the upcoming DC show while speaking with Collider's Steve Weintraub. Here's what she mentioned about the upcoming show:

"This is the first script that I’ve read that I understand why there’s an NDA. Everything is so insane. It is the best writing that I have ever read."

The Never Have I Ever star then went on to explain that although she hasn't had much exposure to the genre of science fiction, the show's brilliant writing had her hooked. She commented:

"I don’t know anything about sci-fi, and I don’t care, actually. But this script makes sci-fi seem like my world. It makes it so accessible to me. I understand everything about this world even though I don’t understand this world. So it’s the best sci-fi script I’ve ever read."

She also revealed the Lanterns starts camera testing later this week on Tuesday.

What is Lanterns all about?

Lanterns is a part and parcel of the first phase of the new DCU, called Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. The show will feature actor Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, and supporting actors Kelly Macdonald and Garrett Dillahunt. The show is expected to be a detective procedural in the vein of the revered HBO show True Detective. Lanterns was created by Damon Lindelof of Lost and Watchmen fame, with Chris Mundy serving as the showrunner.

Ulrich Thomsen, who is famous for his appearance on NBC's Blacklist, has been roped in to play the character of the supervillain Sinestro.

What's the latest buzz around Lanterns?

The show was greenlit by HBO as an eight-part series back in June of last year. Speaking in a joint statement, DC co-chairmen James Gunn and Peter Safran noted:

"We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm, John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and ‘Lanterns’ brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with ‘Superman.'"

Similarly, Casey Bloys, who is the chairman/CEO of HBO and Max Content, had commented:

"We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s ‘Green Lantern. As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live action series will mark an exciting new era."

As revealed by the Collider report, the show is currently undergoing camera tests to perfect the look and feel that would go into the making of the series. Shooting for the HBO show is believed to take place from February to July 2025.
