ABC's 29th season of The Bachelor began with 31-year-old New Jersey day trader Grant Ellis embarking on his quest for love. Twenty-five hopeful ladies were introduced to the audience in the show, however, seven of them had to return home unhappy at the end of the night.
Viewers of The Bachelor saw intimate moments with Grant's family in Houston and his announcement that he was ready for marriage and parenthood before the emotional rose ceremony.
The night featured memorable entrances, including Alexe's scene-stealing "no drama llama" Linda, and a surprise appearance by Grant's sister Taylor that momentarily threw the mansion into chaos. When the roses were finally handed out, Alexe secured not only the coveted first impression rose but also the season's first one-on-one date.
However, for seven contestants, their Bachelor journey ended before it truly began, marking the first eliminations of what promises to be an emotional and transformative season. These eliminated contestants included: Christina, J'Nae, Savannah, Kyleigh, Radhika, Kelsey and Neicey.
What happened in the premiere of The Bachelor Season 29?
Before meeting his potential matches, The Bachelor Grant shared intimate moments with his family, including giving his grandmother Corine Frank Russell what he called "his real first impression rose."
In a poignant moment, he told her,
"This is the first rose that I'm ever gonna hand out. It signifies my love for you and how much I love you as my grandma. And you'll always be my first impression rose."
Sadly, viewers learned through an intertitle tribute that Corine passed away last year.
The evening also featured Grant's vulnerable conversation with his father, Robert, who's recovering from a 30-year addiction struggle. In a pre-season interview with Decider, Grant revealed:
"This journey did so many things for me. It was like a therapy session for me in terms of me rekindling my relationship with my dad, and just finding myself."
The premiere wasn't short on entertainment. Sarafiena made her mark with a giant blow-up photo of Grant's head, while Vicky opted for a grand entrance in a pink Cadillac instead of the traditional limo. Bailey showcased her short bob and convinced Grant to try on a matching wig.
The night's biggest surprise came when Grant's sister Taylor made an unexpected entrance, initially causing panic among the contestants of The Bachelor who thought she might be an ex-girlfriend.
One contestant even remarked that Taylor "walked out vagina first" like she was "on a mission." The tension quickly dissolved into laughter when her true identity was revealed, with the women admitting:
"We're all so happy...we didn't mean anything we were saying five minutes ago."
Who all had to bid Grant Ellis goodbye in this episode?
The seven women who didn't receive roses were:
- Christina, 26, a marketing director from Fargo, North Dakota
- J'Nae, 28, an account coordinator from Colorado Springs, Colorado
- Kelsey, 26, an interior designer from Brooklyn, New York
- Kyleigh, 26, a retail manager from Wilmington, North Carolina
- Neicey, 32, a paediatrician from Blythewood, South Carolina
- Radhika, 28, an attorney from New York, New York
- Savannah, 27, a wedding planner from Charlottesville, Virginia
Grant made his intentions clear from the start, telling his contestants:
"I want to be a husband. I want a wife. I want to be a father. I want to have a family. And I'm here for love, first and foremost."
With Alexe securing both the first impression rose and the first one-on-one date of the season, the competition is already heating up among the remaining 18 women.
As the former basketball player puts his "lone wolf" mentality aside in search of lasting love, viewers can expect what promises to be an emotional journey filled with romance, drama, and vulnerability in the weeks ahead.
The Bachelor airs on Mondays at 8 p.m. PT/ET only on ABC.
