The Amazing Race Season 37 Episode 8 Recap: A cipher problem forms short-term alliances, after which one team misreads the clue

The teams arrived in Bulgaria for the next leg. Various challenges, including a cipher problem solution, Jordan Day Celebration, and more, featured in the eighth episode. A few teams allied to solve the cipher problem, but Erika and Melinda misread the clues.

Misreading the clue resulted in the duo using the taxis for transportation; they still arrived last. Circumstances were against Erika and Melinda, which resulted in their elimination.

The Amazing Race Season 37 Episode 8 Recap: Teams reach Bulgaria where next clues await them

The Amazing Race Season 37 Episode 8, titled We're Letting Race Brain Win started with Alyssa and Josiah. After winning the seventh leg of the show, they were the first team to leave for the next leg. The first clue suggested two options:

1. Going to Lake Ariana, located in Sofia, Bulgaria, and get their next clue
2. Secure the Express Pass before advancing further in the game.

They went for the second option as they were leading by an hour. Mark and Brett were the next team, followed by Han and Holden. They had to self-drive to the small town of Elin Pelin, Sofia. The Amazing Race stars Josiah and Alyssa learned that they had to walk on hot coals to get the Express Pass. After Alyssa went first, Josiah followed.

The Amazing Race Episode 8: A difficult cipher problem leads to short-term alliances

After reaching Lake Ariana, The Amazing Race stars Brett and Mark found the next clue, which led them to the Jordan Day Festival. They had to find the cross from the river, which a priest blessed and threw into the water. Because of the celebration, many people were all around them, dancing and singing.

On the other hand, Melinda and Eriks didn't reach Sofia at first after missing their turn. As a result, to get on the correct path and reach the destination, they had to circle back, which meant losing lots of time. Jack and Carson were running far behind but were still hopeful and in the game.

Alyssa and Josiah get the next clue: to go to the St. Kliment Ohridski Central Library. The rest of the teams were also going to the library from the clue. At first, none of the teams could solve the problem. They were unaware that the key was to turn the equipment for the English translation. After learning that, gradually, teams found the next clue.

However, Alyssa and Josiah didn't know that. On the contrary, The Amazing Race stars Ana and Jonathan figured it out and helped the duo in trouble. Later, Han and Holden arrived at the library, where Melinda and Erika followed. The two teams decided to work together to solve the cipher and formed an alliance.

They were unaware that Erika misread the first part of the clue. She missed a "not" in the instructions, which mentioned not taking a taxi or using transportation. Because of that, the mother-daughter duo misunderstood the clue and used taxis, which they were not supposed to.

The Amazing Race's Carson and Jack finished their first task and reached the library. With their gaming skills, they quickly figured out the solution to the cipher, which Holden saw and told his sister.

However, they didn't share the solution with Melinda and Erika. They teamed up with Carson and Jack and figured out the next clue after deciphering it. Later, Han and Holden helped Melinda and Erika, even though Carson and Jack told them not to.

While teams were unaware of their next destination, Brett and Mark had already reached the Central Military Club. They faced the Roadblock, where they had to learn traditional Bulgarian dancing.

Further on in the episode, Brett and Mark learned their next destination, a Pit Stop at St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. They were the first ones to get there. The duo won $7,500 each and led in the competition. Josiah and Ana followed them after the dance challenge.

After the rest of the teams arrived, Han and Holden were the fifth to reach there, making Melinda and Erika the last. Not only were they the last team to arrive at the pit stop, but they also misread the clue and used taxis. It resulted in their elimination, and Melinda and Erika were sent home.
