The debut season of the spy thriller show The Agency recently came to an explosive conclusion on January 26, 2025. The tenth and final episode of The Agency was aptly titled Overtaken by Events and featured several intriguing storylines, the chief of which consisted of Agent Danny's journey to Tehran.
All throughout The Agency season one, Danny, played by Saura Lightfoot-Leon, was engaged in a battle of wits with her case officer, Naomi, played by Katherine Waterston. When Danny wanted to go out into the world and get commissioned as a secret agent, Naomi held her back, citing reasons that she first needed to prepare herself for the upcoming mission.
While Danny seemed impatient at times, Naomi meticulously prepared her by instilling her cover and frequently testing her about the details of the same. All this training was eventually put to the test when Danny sought to enter Iran. Her cover was established as a geophysics graduate who has secured a prestigious scholarship from Professor Reza and is on the way to Tehran to complete her studies.
However, in a thrilling turn of events, Danny was intercepted by an Iranian officer right after alighting from the aircraft. She was then taken to an interrogation room and detained for hours, as the officer accused her of being a spy. Danny managed to remain calm and saw herself through the interrogation, before being eventually released into Tehran.
Here's everything that we know.
What else happened in the finale episode of The Agency season one?
The season one finale episode of The Agency places Michael Fassbender's Martian in the crosshairs of a putative ally. Following Samia's unsuccessful CIA recruitment in episode 8, which leads to Martian's daring endgame plot in episode 9, Martian is suddenly flipped by MI5's seemingly innocent but clever James Richardson.
The last episode continues the dual narratives of Martian's frantic search for Samia in a Sudanese black site jail and the CIA's last attempt to retrieve compromised Agent Coyote from Russian-occupied Ukraine on the way to Moscow. The finale episode further reveals that Robinshaw, who had been interviewing Martian in earlier episodes, is Richardson's deputy at MI5.
Blair and Owen commence a professional relationship when the latter recognizes Coyote in an extremely important moment. General Volchok and Deputy Defense Minister Chekhov face their doom as the CIA wins a major triumph, extracting Coyote and two of the three Felix agents in a single operation. Martian goes back to the Fishbowl as a hero, with a fresh secret to conceal.
Creators speak about The Agency season one
John-Henry Butterworth and his brother Jez Butterworth are the creators of the spy thriller show. Both of them sat down with The Hollywood Reporter in an exclusive interview, speaking about the show. John-Worth commented:
"This is a world where everybody’s playing chess against everybody else. Martian treats (James) as a friend and asks him for a favor, and instantly this man weaponizes it and uses it against him. He sees Martian having a personal vulnerability and he uses it as a professional weakness and suddenly he’s on him, he’s controlling him and he owns him, and Martian has to try and get out of that trap in order to survive.”
The Agency season one is exclusively available on Paramount+ with Showtime.
