On April 13, 2025, HBO's second season of The Last of Us premiered, and as per the storyline, Joel and Ellie are now residents of Jackson, Wyoming, five years after the events of season 1. They are coping with the fallout from their past while acclimating to life with new friends Dina and Jesse.

The story from The Last of Us Part II is carried over into the season, and in that, Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal return as Joel and Ellie, while Kaitlyn Dever portrays a brand-new character named Abby. Despite some speed issues, many praised the action.

In The Last of Us Season 2, a significant modification to Joel's death makes the teaser for Episode 3 even more poignant. Tommy isn't with Joel when he dies, so his sadness seems like guilt for not being present. Ellie's revenge quest exacerbates the anguish, making the following episode even more difficult to watch.

With its realistic depiction of a post-apocalyptic world where survival and interpersonal relationships are intertwined, The Last of Us never fails to enthrall viewers. Based on the wildly successful video game, the series follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they deal with the brutal reality of human strife while navigating a world overrun by infected animals.

The aftermath of Joel's tragic death takes center stage in the trailer for Season 2 Episode 3, and as per the plot, the gruesome death of Joel in the previous episode stunned viewers and laid the groundwork for Ellie's subsequent emotional journey. The consequences of this loss will be explored in further detail in Episode 3, which will follow Ellie as she works through her grief.

The sneak peek shows her searching through Joel's stuff, keeping his garments dear to her heart, before discovering a revolver, symbolizing her change toward revenge. Ellie is desperate to find the people responsible for Joel's killing, and Dina (Isabela Merced) provides her with critical information.

The teaser also depicts Tommy (Gabriel Luna), who is clearly saddened by Joel's death, and as per the main plot, his sadness is coupled with remorse because he wasn't there to defend his sibling.

Tommy's emotional journey has a new dimension as a result of this departure from the game, in which he was present when Joel passed away. It suggests that Tommy could be burdened by survivor's guilt, laying the groundwork for his own difficulties in the upcoming episodes.
