Jon Snow’s storyline in Game of Thrones did not quite pan out the way fans wanted it to. Played by Kit Harington, the character became a fan-favorite over the years due to his righteous and brave personality.

However, after being resurrected from the dead and leading an army against the White Walkers, Jon was ultimately banished from the kingdom and sent to the Night's Watch for killing Daenerys Targaryen, who had turned into the Mad Queen.

Viewers have time and again expressed their disappointment over how the creators did not give him the ending he deserved, but Kit Harington has no qualms about it. In a 2019 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor said he loved Jon Snow’s ending in Game of Thrones as it finally led to the character’s freedom:

“I loved it. When I read it, that bit really made me cry. What really made me cry was on the paper: ‘End of Game of Thrones.’ But as far as an ending for Jon Snow, this character that I loved for so many years and had grown so close to, and had meant so much to me.”
“Seeing him go beyond the Wall back to something true, something honest, something pure with these people he was always told he belongs with the Free Folk, it felt to me like he was finally free. Instead of being chained and sent to the Wall, it felt like he was set free.”

In the final episode of Game of Thrones, Jon Snow stabs Daenerys Targaryen after she burns down King’s Landing. The council, headed by the newly elected King Bran Stark, decides to spare his life and exile him to the Night’s Watch.

In his interview, Kit Harington revealed he read the finale’s script for the first time during the table read. Earlier than that, his co-star Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen, had told him that he would be surprised by the finale:

“I hadn't read the scripts for the final season until the table read. I wanted to hear them around the table, without having read anything first. I sat on a plane next to Emilia on the way to the read-through in Belfast, and she had read them already, and she was like, ‘Sh**, Kit. You are in for some surprises.’ That piqued my interest.”

Kit added that when he read Jon was going to kill Daenerys, he was shocked:

“I didn't realize what was going to happen the whole way through until maybe half a page before Jon kills Dany. I remember my mouth dropping open and looking across Emilia at the table, who was slowly nodding as I went, ‘No, no, no!’ It was a ‘holy f*ck’ moment, pardon my language. Jaw-dropping.”

Kit played the role of Jon Snow across all eight seasons of Game of Thrones and earned several accolades for his performance, including Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. The actor was earlier reported as reprising his role in a spin-off titled Snow; however, HBO has not moved ahead with the project as of now.

Based on George R. R. Martin’s novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, Game of Thrones is counted among the most popular shows in television history. The series has been appreciated for its unexpected twists, stellar performances, and visual effects.

All seasons of Game of Thrones are streaming on Max.
