Syfy recently renewed The Ark for season 3 after its second season surprised viewers with multiple cliffhangers. The story follows Ark One, a spacecraft where the characters are stuck. It takes place 100 years into the future, where people fight to fulfill their primal needs.

Season 2 left various subplots unresolved for the viewers. Evelyn Maddox, who was believed to be dead, is revealed to be alive in the finale, while Garnet decides to venture back to space to save people from the catastrophe. What these narrative twists would lead to is still uncertain, as the new season is expected to be released in 2026.

According to an exclusive report by TVLine, series creator and show runner Dean Devlin said,

“We’re thrilled to launch another season of The Ark! Back in space again, and the best is yet to come!”

The series focuses on Ark One, which is hit by a catastrophe, killing various important people while the junior officers and cadets take charge. Lt. Sharon Garnet, Lt. Spencer Lane, and Lt. James Brice, step up to lead the mission. The following episodes portray the challenges, distrust, and decision-making among the crew members as they face water and food shortage while the system crashes, compelling them to make some radical decisions.

Season 1 introduces viewers to Ark 15, a different spacecraft that operates under contrasting rules and emerges as an antagonist within the Shuttle Ark program. In Ark One, leadership is shared, and decisions are made collectively, while Ark 15 follows an authoritarian rule.

In season 2 of The Ark, Evelyn Maddox, who was assumed to be dead, is alive and is secretly controlling the colony using William Trust’s implant technology. This turned many people, including Captain Sharon Garnet, into mind-controlled puppets. However, Maddox’s daughter, Kelly Fowler, ultimately killed her to stop her reign of terror.

The season 2 finale showcases some mysterious discoveries. Ark One received a warning from Ross 128B, signaling potential dangers, while Angus Medford discovered something unknown. A new romance blossomed between Dr. Sanjivni Kabir and Dr. Marsh, while some crew members got promoted.

What should we expect from season 3 of The Ark?

Showrunner Dean Devlin explains that the show is challenging to write because the entire narrative is limited in terms of space and characters. He says that the show can't introduce any guest stars because all the characters are stuck in the spacecraft. There are no aliens or laser guns, but actual people who need to survive in the worst situations.

The previous seasons showcase the characters reaching a distinct planet, Trappist 1D. Season 3 could explore more about the new planet Trappist 1D, which has some hope for the human life existence, while the mysterious storyline that was left unresolved in season 2 will complete its arc in the new season.

The last two seasons of the show did mediocrely well, with a 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.7 rating on IMDB.
