Netflix's Sweet Magnolias follows three lifelong best friends—Maddie, Helen, and Dana Sue who grew up in Serenity and are now leading their lives as adults. At the heart of the series is their friendship, as each of them navigates through ups and downs.

The show also introduces other residents and people connected to the main characters, one of them being Maddie's ex-husband Bill Townsend (played by Chris Klein). He had been an important figure introduced in Season 1, in which Bill and Maddie finalized their divorce and officially parted ways.

However, their divorce didn't end Billy's story in the show, as he was also connected to other characters and shared three kids with Maddie. Now that Bill has unexpectedly died, this event will have a notable impact on the lives of his biological son Isaac, estranged daughter Bex, ex-fiancée Noreen, and Kathy.

Showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson sat in an interview with US Weekly and talked about Bill Townsend's demise in Sweet Magnolias. Anderson said:

"I prefer to think of it as Bill’s untimely passing. Not that we killed off Bill. But the reason [he died] is we were looking for a cataclysmic event that would strike everybody at the core of their being."

The showrunner continued:

"And across his time in Serenity, [Bill] has been central, obviously to Maddie and the kids but also to the group of friends around them [and] to other people in town."

Anderson explained that Kathy and Bill's storyline in Season 3 was an opportunity to introduce an unexpected shock in the next chapter. Not only this, but the showrunner also mentioned that the characters will now face existential questions like:

"'Could time run out for me tomorrow? And if it does, what’s my legacy? Have I spent my time wisely? Am I doing what I should be doing? Am I with the person I truly love?'..."

As seen in Sweet Magnolias Season 4 Episode 3, the kids are devasted by the loss of their father, and Maddie is comforting them. She had just begun a stable relationship with her fiancé-turned-husband, Cal Maddox, and now it's disrupted by the death of her ex-husband.

While the makers loved working with Chris Klein, they had to make this bold decision to conclude Bill Townsend's character arc. The actor's exit is purely due to the creative decision for his on-screen character.
